I posted about the same problem, and really only on my pears as far as tree leaves go. Mine's definitely a night feeder. I haven't done the flashlight thing, but judging by a nearby grape vine, I know I have cutworms there and apparently they can affect fruit trees! Who knew, lol? I'm treating for cutworms and I'll see if that does it. My pears are young (not many leaves/branches) and begin branching low to the ground, too. So cutworms could make sense in my case. I don't know if that helps you any, but maybe so :)

I have used traps, sprays, covers and so on to control these pesky insects in Wisconsin.... we have severe infestations of them.... they defoliated my cherry tree in one day! Needless to say, since then I rely mostly on netting to prevent the contact with them. Other than that, I have also tried another method, though it is not fun. If you manage to collect enough beetles from your traps, and have an old blender, Grind those suckers up with lots of water, strain the emulsion, and use a pump sprayer with a spreader sticker added to the water. They do not like the smell of dead japanese beetles, and tend to stay away from the plants sprayed with this.... it has to be applied often if you have lots of rain ( a downfall, depending on the size of your vines) but given the relatively dry summer we have had at least, the re-application has only had to be once a week or so. Some long term solutions include adding milky spore to your lawn, this takes a while for the fungus to build up in the soil, but it kills the grubs before emerging as beetles, so I have had success with this. In all honesty, a combination of all of these will do the most good, as well has hand picking in the morning while they are inactive. I hope that this helps you out!

These fruit flies are all the buzz over on Fruit and Orchards forum (no pun intended). It's been a huge problem in the South and PNW for years, just moved into our area the past couple of years, but last year was so dry they weren't in the (shriveled) blackberries, and I thought the blueberries were just growing soft from the heat we had in June, so didn't notice them until this year. I've mentioned to DH a couple of times this week that they are moving into the wild blackberries growing at the south end of the house (that he's mowed down once but grew back over the past couple of years), and just yesterday morning said we have to take out everything on both sides of the road out back since I can't keep up with picking and they're absolute swarms now. I took DD to a horse show today and DH just cut the grass, not the canes. So either I have to take the machete to them or else wait for him to do it next Sat. Oh, back to grapes - I don't think SWD is supposed to bother grapes (too thick-skinned) unless they are damaged/overripe. What they really like are the just-ripening brambles, esp. raspberries b/c they're so soft. Kncok on wood, none in the Triple Crowns yet.

I'm only two years into growing some Concord and White Niagara (both v. lambrusca) and I'm growing in less than ideal conditions (part shade) so I don't have much to offer yet. Grapes will definitely grow in our area, based on the number of vineyards and acres planted but I think they are seeded v. vinafera and they need some soil pH adjustments. So far, I haven't had to spray anything and I haven't had any fungal problems on the leaves - no fruit set yet so no cluster problems. I'm betting that I'll have to spray something but hope I can go as organic as possible ... lime sulfer dormant sprays and sulfer for fungicide, etc. since if they're growing commercially near me, something's going to travel.
