Tomatoes 2016 – What are you growing this year?
Comments (19)First off let me say that i am not a tomato person. Not because i don't like tomatoes (although i dont like bland store tomatoes anymore). But because i've had terrible luck growing tomatoes in the past. Just haven't found any good ones for my climate and soil. Although in fairness i haven't given it a lot of tries. This year i plan to change that. I have several varieties i'd like to try and i will save the best for including in my own breeding project. I will be following Joseph Lofthouse's tomato breeding progress with his adapted to Utah. I may even use his varieties in the future and probably swap any good genetics i find back with him. Breeding a tomato variety that is highly attractive to pollinators and open to natural cross pollinating would be fantastic. I am also focusing on flavor. That Burrell's Special sounds interesting. I'm always on the hunt for locally adapted varieties. Often it makes the breeding and selection much easier. These are the tomatoes i'd like to plant this year, but i don't know if i have room for all of them. It depend on how much room i save for other projects like the watermelon. Comments (40)powermuffin lol, they remind me of the Pigpen character in Charlie Brown. My 10 yo grandson is a cross between Bear Grylls and "Pigman"...I only know of these people because hunting, fishing and survival shows are his passion. Sweet Sawyer is her own little free spirit that likes to chase butterflies, fireflies and pick flowers, but, follows her brother thru the woods like a loyal puppy. When Thatcher was younger I used to tease him that I'd have to pick him up by his ears and plop his nekkid self in the tub (too dirty to walk thur the house!) I can't truly appreciate her decorating style because it's so totally opposite from mine, but as long as she's thrilled with the outcome, that's all I care about. Here are a few pictures I took the other day. They're doing most of the inside work themselves (except for sheetrock and kit. cabs). She's going for an old OLD farmhouse using as much old OLD stuff she can find and/or build from old OLD stuff. She made most of the light fixtures. I hear she's making bathroom faucets but I haven't seen any yet The sloppy mortar job was left on purpose Someone forgot to spray the shower ceiling The "window" above the range area is an old door. It opens onto a covered patio that attaches the main cottage to the guest cottage. Step down into the vestibule that connects the main cottage to the master cottage. Floors are plywood cut in 10" width planks. Standing on the porch of the master cottage looking towards the porch of the main living area. LOTS of outdoor living space...master cottage porch, main porch, guest cottage porch and covered patio (with fireplace) between main house and guest house. The babies have 20 acres to run on :) Dining room Light above old OLD clawfoot tub. She got this at an auction. It's older than dirt but she rewired it, cleaned it up and painted it. The outside of the clawfoot tubs look a lot like the old OLD door at the top. I thought she would be refinishing the outside, but no :o BTW, DH (who is their contractor) dubbed this house the "Whitehouse" months ago <g>...See MoreAloe plicatilis 2016...@16 years old.
Comments (11)I never trim it..but bad people have as you can see in the left lower. Its set pods Aloebot, but I've never tried growing more. I have a second smaller that is a cutting from the the above plant. It was made a cutting years ago when the newspaper gal missed the porch and hit the A.plicatilis. An accident I can overlook....See MoreThe unusual garden year of 2016
Comments (43)Sometimes the world is so topsy turvy, as texasranger says it's quite alien and unreal. Many years ago, I went on a high school field trip to an abattoir. At the end, they pointed out the pail of red dust (dried blood) and white coarse sand (bone meal). And then added that no part went to waste...and they fed it back to the cows! All my little mind could ask at the time was "But aren't cows vegetarians???" An alien moment for you. Now, I am no scientist, but years later, when mad cow was running rampant, I could not express the same surprise which many did as I remembered that field trip and knew that the groundwork for this had been well laid....See MoreLisa
