Comments (2)it's probably a bit late to plant potatoes, but this year, who knows? i'd plant them in nursery pots, mix hay and cheap soil, and you'll probably get $5 out of them. next year put the potatoes in as early as september. they tolerate our frosts fine and you can harvest throughout spring....See MoreHow early can I plant potatoes? Comments (5)I always pull volunteers as they seldom develop into anything worth the space. As for planting now, measuring you soil temp is the best way to know if it is already too warm for them. I know my soil temp in 6b is already too warm since it is up to 65 already but don't know about yours. Mine were planted in early March and we are already eating some new potatoes from them. Comments (6)Agree. I planted several different varieties of potatoes thanks to a sampler pack from Moose's Tubers. One variety is starting to look awful. It has already bloomed. I have Colorado potato beetles which I try to keep hand picked so I do have some beetle damage but I see none on your plants. This looks like normal aging of plants and they will look worse and worse. I think this is a surprise to new gardeners and it can be confusing since different varieties have different schedules. According to the Farmers Almanac, potato vines usually die by the end of August. Here in NH zone 5-ish, I've dug some new potatoes from a couple of plants that grew from potatoes I missed during harvest last year....See MoreWild Haired Mavens
