Design Challenge--Idea Boards Wanted

This is the new office space, it is about 10x14 plus an odd cubby thing. This was an unexpected change, we need to furnish it within the next 10 days. The photo is taken as I entered the space.

Between working FT and trying to keep our home project on course, I just don't have the energy to do this... the only thing that can be used is an old desk. I do have a set of Rowe slipcovered loveseats if needed...I think I'd have to dye the current pale yellow covers as the last time I priced new ones they were $$ and I don't have time to sew them.

Essential Needs: area rug, sofa or loveseat, 1-2 chairs that are comfortable to sit in for up to an hour, lamps/floor lamp

Color: current carpet is grayish. Office is used for therapy--so no whites/lights due to lots of use. He is open, but tends to be transitional to slightly traditional. He likes simple design, not ornate or heavy.

Budget: Absolute max 2.5K, less would be great. I have no problem with Craigslist, but the time constraint makes that tough. Ikea is a long drive, but is possible.

Thanks for any idea boards, pointers, sources...it is so appreciated.

Can you give us a picture of the desk that you think can be reused? And where are you located (in case we want to do Craigslist)?

I am in Monterey County, CA so and don't have a picture of the desk...but it is a very old med dark oak secretary style (think roll top, but with flip down writing area) with two drawer stacks on the base. Thanks!

I'm using an interior designer in my area on a consult as needed basis. Believe me, small "emergencies" will crop up (i.e., grout the wrong color)where you will need someone who can pop in for quick consults here and there. I paid consult fees and interviewed three designers to get the right person. What I learned was that an ASID designer,someone who has a four year degree and is in your area, is your best bet. As the other GardenWebers have already told you, you should now weed out candidate #1. His pattern of behavior is saying loud and clear that he does not want your job at this time. I got the same behavior pattern from someone who sells custom cabinets. They keep making up excuses until you finally get the message.

I made two design walls in my new sewing room and I love them. I don't know now how I could manage without them. I found some great 72" wide quality felt on bolts at my local craft store, it was about $5 a yard. Lots of colors available, I made one wall out of black, and one wall out of white. I liked the heavier substance of felt. I found I could pin a big piece of this felt directly to the wall and it would have worked fine just like that. It is heavy enough that it smooths right out and lays smooth with little effort. However I opted to mount it onto 2 inch foam insulation board so that I have the option to pin. Entire blocks stick to the surface of this stuff beautifully. I have 42 completed blocks up there now without a single pin. They've been there for a couple days and are hanging onto the felt just fine while I try to figure out how to actually make a quilt out of them! (:

I use Paint. In order to have more than one picture on a board, start a new file and make the white area quite large by dragging the edges. Save that as your main design file. Now, use the drop down box under the clipboard symbol. You'll see the option to "paste from" which, when chosen, will allow you to paste any other file on your computer by highlighting that file and clicking "open". Once you've pasted an element, you can move it around as long while it still has the dotted-line box around it. When you have placed the element where you want it on your board, click outside the element to fix it in place. Add more elements by chosing the "paste from" option again. You can also add text boxes to label elements, resize the elements, etc.

Any chance you want or need to put a filing cabinet in the cubby area? I ask because I have mine in a similarly sized closet. Also, that cubby may have had doors on it at one time and been a closet, just like in my home office. Would you like it back as a closet? Mine has nice wood louvered doors so it great for stashing things away in and the room looks calm and tidy when they are closed . . .

For an inexpensive solution, a hotel liquidators, if there were one around, would be a perfect answer. They have couches and chairs and mirrors, lamps, end tables, wall art, credenzas, etc. for great prices. Don't know if there's one in your area, but there is one in ours.

Everything except the rug and lampshade are off of the greater Monterey area Craigslist.

Chair-$229

Sofa-$600 (I think this is actually a set with a loveseat, which you may or may not want)

Side table-$25

Lamp-$695 (yes, this is ridiculously expensive; it sounded as if it were from a known artist.)

Art-$100

Rug (Overstock.com)- $456

Lampshade (Target)-$35

Total: $2139

While chasing down Craigslist items can be a time-consuming pain, if you want a furnished room in ten days, you may not have time to purchase something new. I think it would be a challenge to get something delivered withing two weeks from most retailers. Plus, getting everything you want at the price you want would be a challenge.
