Sap wood in Gritty Mix & 5:1:1 question

Is the issue with sap wood mostly that it breaks down much faster than bark? It seems as though pretty much any mulch available in the Boston area is at least 1/3 sap wood. This year I took the time to pick out pieces and remove as much sapwood as possible, but it was time consuming and annoying.
For longer term plantings in gritty mix, if the issue is breakdown speed, then sap wood is obviously an issue. But for single season veggie plantings, is sapwood that big of a problem?
