Native Plant Hedge - Northern California
Comments (11)I have a beautiful ceanothus hedge in my yard. Right now it's in full beautiful lilac blue bloom. It shapes into a hedge very nicely. Dendromecon is a rangy bush and doesn't form a hedge. I have a flannel bush as well and it's pruned into a nice box hedge. But it grows very quickly and has to be pruned back every summer. It's also in full bloom and is covered in waxy yellow flowers. Maybe even Toyon can be hard pruned to a hedge. Or even a california laurel. I never tried though I have both plants. Both have to be pruned because they are very fast growers in Southern Cal. Manzanita makes a good bush, but I've never made it into a hedge. You really want to see those striking red trunks and limbs. Maybe even try California bush poppy: Carpinteria. It has lovely white poppy-like blooms each spring. It is a very compact grower. At least for me....See MoreWill these California natives look good in a cottage garden?
Comments (3)Your choices are perfect for a cottage garden in California. I would grow the roses in the background where they can go wild. Here are a few other plants that I think work well in my garden: Hummingbird Sage (part shade, smells heavenly) Monkey flower (short-lived, but a luscious apricot color and lots of flowers) Annual clarkia (check out both elegant clarkia and godetia/farewell to spring) Annual larkspur Baby Blue Eyes Nemesia California poppy Matilija poppy (needs a massive amount of space) St. Catherine's Lace (ditto- very pretty, but BIG) Mexican Elderberry (so pretty, so huge) Oregon/California Grape Native plants that I did not like in my garden: California fucshia (spelling? too few flowers) Cleveland Sage (too big and dusty-looking for the spot) Tidytips (too leggy and sparse) Plants I always wanted and never had the space for: Garrya elliptica Silktassel plant- gorgeous. Very difficult to find and it is a slow grower. Ceanothus (perfect for a cottage garden) Globe Gilia (so pretty! Love the blue.) Your garden will be spectacular. Do a search for jkom here on the cottage garden to see what she has done with her yard. You can also do a search for wanda on the California gardening forum to see a really spectacular native cottage- style garden. Comments (17)I used to see some similar wild gourds on my property in the high chaparral 4700ft elev above Anza CA. One of the names was Coyote Gourd. The Rabbits loved them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucurbita_foetidissima http://www.laspilitas.com/nature-of-california/plants/3398--cucurbita-palmata http://www.laspilitas.com/nature-of-california/plants/1143--cucurbita-foetidissima...See MoreOT - California Native Gardening Workshops and Tours
Comments (2)Thank you for the info on tea and China roses! I have a few new editions of tea and China roses... and I was thinking that in time that might work so it's great to read your confirmation. I don't have quite as much land to fill, but I still like adding a few natives, especially for beneficial insects, pollinators and harmony in the garden. The hummingbirds have claimed some of my natives as their territory. They're funny little birds to be so cute and tiny, yet so aggressive about their territory! I have found that drip irrigation allows other plants that want a different watering schedule to do well with natives. Or planting in different areas like you do Rosefolly. I tend to like what I consider to be pretty natives that go well with other flowers... but I really should add some manzanita and ceanothus too. Others will have much more knowledge than me, but the ones I notice do well near other plants in my garden that want more water (like my roses, azaleas, citrus, etc) are: Island snapdragon (seems to be a hummingbird favorite) http://calscape.org/Gambelia-speciosa-(Island-Snapdragon) Verbena De La Mina (wonderful fragrance) http://www.smgrowers.com/products/plants/plantdisplay.asp?plant_id=2115 Coyote Mint http://calscape.org/Monardella-sheltonii-(Coyote-Mint)?srchcr=sc5839a0366cf8c Agastache (Smell so unique and refreshing) http://calscape.org/Agastache-urticifolia-(Nettle-Leaf-Giant-Hyssop)?srchcr=sc5839a0fdec102 California Nettle (some nettle seem to be great in shady, damp spots in my yard where not a lot grows) http://calscape.org/loc-California/Nettle%20(all)?srchcr=sc5839a13de32a2 Salvia http://calscape.org/loc-California/Salvia%20(all)?srchcr=sc5839a2293675e Douglas Iris http://calscape.org/Iris-douglasiana-(Douglas'-Iris)?srchcr=sc5839a3476b9dd I'm trying purple tansy (Phacelia) this year too. Here's more about that...http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/4297726/attracting-beneficial-buggers-tansy-is-just-ugly-except-this-one?n=10 Next year I want to add a few more. Probably lupine, ceanothus, manzanita and maybe a few others....See Moremacranthos
