California native bentgrass or fine-leafed Fescue no-mow sod?
Comments (8)Contrary to what some sales people tell you, the bentgrass does not thrive in partial shade. It needs a good 6 hours of direct sunlight. For areas with more shade, you will need a fine fescue for that. Something like red, chewings, hard or sheep fescue will tolerate the most shade. These are very fine bladed grasses which fall over when they get about 5 inches long. If you pick bentgrass it will be invasive to an extent. If the underground runners can reach sunlight, they will seem to jump many feet to establish in other sunny areas. In full sun it is fairly invasive to flower beds. Most people don't like the lime green color of bentgrasses as compared to the forest green of the hybrid fescues and Kentucky bluegrasses. How many days of the year do you have temps in the 90s. If you have 90s for more than a week, fescue would not be appropriate. Instead either the bentgrass or UC Verde Buffalo grass would work in the full sun. Then use mulch in the shade. Fescues simply need too much water in the heat. They are cool season grasses. In California fescue can do well above 4,000 feet or on the western slope of the coastal range. UC Verde spreads above ground and can be controlled better than bentgrass. UC Verde is also lime green as compared to fescues....See MoreRecommendations on California Native plant (photo included)
Comments (24)I realize this is an old thread, but for anyone searching for similar info...Tree of Life Nursery is an awesome resource. It's great to visit, too, (in San Juan Capistrano) but the website has a ton of detailed guidance on Calif. native plants. And re manzanita, I don't know what's happening in San Diego, but up here in coastal OC, it grows all over the place (almost down to the ocean). Big Berry Manzanita is my favorite but there are hundreds of others. Calscape is the best source for info. @Mrs.McConnell’s Algebra I, I'd love to know what you ended up planting and how it worked out! p.s. I'm also doing a native plant garden, front and back, partly because of an environmentally-oriented son. Killed our lawn 10-12 years ago after he (then age 9) was hounding us about it. :)...See MoreDrought tolerant wild tree, maybe california native

Comments (17)Thank you so much, guys @KW PNW Z8@CA Kate z9@Christopher CNC@Mrs. S@tracefloyd For the powerline, as long as the trees are under 15', it should be fine. I read your replies, went to the nursery, researched, and found some options. 1. Toyon 2. Pacific Wax Myrtle 3.Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 4. Hesperocyparis Forbesii(Tecate Cypress) 5. Atriplex lentiformis / Quail Bush 6. Arctostaphylos Manzanita 'Dr. Hurd' A non-native plant that I like a lot: Knife Acacia I have a sideyard that needs some privacy trees as well( see pics below) so thinking about picking one or two trees to cover both the sideyard and the front planter that I showed the pictures earlier. What do you guys think? Thank you again for your time!...See Moresocalgal_gw Zone USDA 10b Sunset 24
