Dendrobium cane cuttings

I have a dendrobium orchid that died, probably due to root rot. I only found out it was a dendrobium when it was already dying. The canes began dying from the bottom up. I cut off sections of the cane that were still green and laid them horizontally on a 50/50 mix of potting mix/perlite in a plastic cup. I misted, then put a lid over the container.

The cut ends grew mold a day after I put them in the soil. I cut off the mold and put it back on the soil. What can I do to stop the mold from coming back? I'm thinking of dipping the end in honey.

I wouldn't use honey for fear or attracting insects (I doubt it would fix the mold).

I'd try to post this same thing at the Orchid Forum (nearby, pls. see top of page); you already know Dendrobiums are Orchids which can require special /different care.

Example: potting mix & perlite is fine for some houseplants, but MAYBE not orchids, which are often in bark mix (or long fiber sphagnum moss) instead of soil.

I also think keeping them covered is encouraging the mold, not minimizing it.

Thanks to everyone for the advice! I spent some time a friendÂs house this afternoon on my lunch break that has lots of these pendant type dendrobiums hanging from his trees. My den. That has a mushy cane is definitely a lot softer & a very different color from any of his. He has suggested as some of you have to cut it if the browning & soften continue to progress along the cane. He did not have any real ideas as to what may have caused it so I may never know. So I am marking the cane with tape to track the progress of the browning & softening. If I see it progress to another segment of the cane I will chop it off & send it to the U.F. orchid disease lab here in South Florida to see what the root of the problem is. Leafless canes are the ones that will bloom in Dec.-Jan (here in US). Even bloomed leafless canes are resevoirs of water and energy and are usually good to keep. This time of year they should be plumping up-- mine are outside now in maximum sun that I can find and watered with dilute fertilizer nearly eveyday. This is the fast growing period now into Sept.

These warm growing Dendrobiums have no resale value here where you can grow lots of stuff in your backyard without worrying about heating. The Dendrobiums grown around these parts are the cooler growing Australian Native Dendrobiums (species and hybrids) and the nobile types. Tried Latouria types and failed. At the shows around these parts Latouria and the warm growing hard-cane types are as scarce as hen's teeth and the one that you do see are poor relations of those seen in warmer climates. Similar comments apply to Vanda. Seduced by going on a trip to warm, sunny Queensland where the warm growing hard-cane type replace Cymbidium as the main genera grown. Sunny is not a problem. heating a glasshouse to maintain 55-60F minimum is. As for speciality, Cattleyas, Sarcochilus, Tolumnia, and those cooler growing Australian Native Dens comprise the main bulk of the collection.

Hi they say a pic is worth a thousand words. This is my Den as you can see it has bloomed from a leafless cane. It actually has three spikes all from leafless canes. So you can just leave the canes because it will probly bloom from it. I will post a pic of the entire plant below so you can see what I mean. I hope this will make you feel better. VELLETA.

I've had new plants start from the tops of leafless Dendrobium canes but they were basically healthy and not rotting at the base. Honey is a sterilising agent, that's why it keeps for such a long time without any refrigeration or other preservatives added. But cinnamon powder would probably be a more practical fungicide to use.

Update:

The keiki is growing swimmingly!

July 28:

A few days after this picture I ended up moving the keiki to sphagnum moss. Here it is today:

It just grew a new leaf! :D

Right now it sits on a warm windowsill underneath a south-facing window. I soak the bottom of the moss whenever the moss dries. Its longest root is about an inch long.

I never thought that the canes I cut would be able to produce anything. I honestly just cut the canes as a last ditch effort to see if anything would happen. The resiliency of orchids and their ability to bounce back from almost nothing really amazes me.

It's looking good. But I'd be a bit careful with sphagnum, it holds a lot of water.
