Fall clearance sales: buy non-hardy ones now for next spring?
Comments (3)I've got tons of purple oxalis inside; the stuff grows like a weed under the right conditions. Never had it survive a winter outside (the minimum temperatures over the last two years was -3.5F and 2F). Supposedly cold hardy to zone 7 with mulch (the rhizomes grow close to the surface). They do okay in light shade, but even better in a sunny location with well-drained soil and a good watering a couple times per week. The rhizomes can be store for months in a cool area like a basement or garage; I've stored them up to around 5 months dry. Email me if you want some; I've got a zillion (literally -- more than a dozen large windowboxes and smaller pots galore). My wife really likes New Guinea Impatiens for shady planters. Comments (2)Wow, Dorie. I've grown them in pots in a dead shady corner, and they were happy, flowering continuously. Now that I have a blazing sunny roof, I'm going to buy some this spring. Fmogul, I planted bulbs in the ground in Bklyn. after Christmas one year. The ground in our protected back yard didn't freeze until late Jan., and then not too deeply. Ferns, hostas, snow drops, miniature irises for shade all came up perfectly in spring. But the oxalis in a large terra cotta pot definitely wanted to come in. Comments (19)Greentiger and others in Houston area - this isn't really a clearance sale. It's their regular price most of the year. They will stay at this price until they bring Christmas trees in. I've been buying a lot of stuff there, too, and have watched the merchandise change quite a bit in the last 2-3 months. Take advantage of it. I may get a lime, even though it will be gone if we have a hard freeze like we had last winter and winter before last. It's very tempting! And don't prune citrus now, wait til early spring. You don't have to prune citrus at all if you don't want to. Redrac, I have a miho satsuma, it's several years old. Give it 2-3 years to start producing good fruit. I didn't let any of my citrus produce the first year they were in the ground, so they'd make a good root system. Next year, I let them make 2 or 3. The satsumas were large and pulpy and not very sweet. Last year, it put on about 12, and they were the right size, firm, and sweet and juicy!...See MoreHardie plank siding plus trim
Comments (1)There is vinyl, and then there is premium vinyl. The best vinyl soffit has hidden slotted vents that can't be seen from the ground, and the material is thick. It works well and looks good, provided you get a good color match. Don't accept any other soffit material in vinyl. I'm not sure about the aluminum rake and facia boards. $2,500 for all Hardie sounds reasonable, depending on how many linear feet are involved. It's certainly not way out of line....See Moregeoffrey_b
