That looks like a bull's eye to me :( Get well soon! I'm so glad he's getting it checked out. Sorry he's going through this.

Yes, it looks like a bull's eye to me too. I hope his doctor prescribes a month or two of doxycycline. It's not a good idea to wait for symptoms (while the spirochetes proliferate). Best of luck to him! He's actually lucky to get the very obvious bull's eye. Many people who get Lyme never got it, or never saw it.

Wow that's the clearest example of the bullseye I have seen. Definitely get the treatment started.

Sorry. I meant to add that it does look like the oft-described bullseye rash of Lyme. Or if not that, then some sort of poisonous bite or sting.

Susan, no wonder he's worried! Let us know what he finds out...I've never seen such a reaction.

Susan, how did your son make out? I hope the doctor isn't insisting on a Lyme test, and basing treatment on the results. The test is famous for false negatives.

Thanks for all the concern, yea, he went to doc, had bloodwork, will hear tomorrow if its definite, he started him on the med. that Alisa de mentioned above. So far, so good.

Just make sure he's on the meds for at least a month. Many years ago, I had lyme and was given antibios for only 10 day. Then I broke out in a random rash all over the left side of my body. I then went on for 6 weeks and it cleared it up.

I'm not sure what the plan is, Susan, but if the test comes out negative and the doctor cuts him off doxycycline, be sure he takes note of any symptoms that might appear. That could be anything from fever and night sweats to knee pain or headaches, among many others. If he doesn't feel right, he should get back on the doxy ASAP.

Even if the Lyme test is negative, unless another cause is conclusively
determined, he should probably keep taking the dox, since as Alisande
mentions, the test they perform for Lyme is notorious for false
negatives.

Another possibility that occurs to me is that is could
be some sub-cutaneous infection of a nasty bacteria. Does he live in an
area that have been affected by the flooding? Or has he visited and helped out in such an area?

Lastly if it starts looking much worse, and the doctors say "It must be a Brown Recluse Spider bite", that in all likelihood is a guess on their part, and most likely a wrong one since the Brown Recluse's range doesn't extend into West Virginia.

Haven't heard from the bloodwork yet. He started on the meds, is tired, grouchy, but still felt good enough to visit his girlfriend this evening!!
