Fruit Tree? Makes small apricot-colored fruit.

This fruit tree is currently growing in northern California, been around for a long time and is still producing fruit but fewer and fewer every year. There's talk about cutting it down and replacing it, but we have no idea what it is.

The meat of the fruit has the same texture as a peach or apricot. The seed inside is a pit, brown and slippery. When ripe, it has a similar color to apricot but paler. The fruit is not fuzzy but not slick. The taste is unlike any other fruit I can compare it to.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Would like to finally know what this is!
