Help me revitalize my lawn (no green thumb here!)
Comments (3)Here are the OP's pictures Yes, we have some better suggestions. Never use a chemical fertilizer early in the spring. If you feel like you must be spreading something on the lawn, try a preemergent herbicide. Perhaps a better option would be an organic fertilizer. If you want to apply a chemical fertilizer, do it no sooner than after you mow real grass for the second time. A better time is to wait until the initial flush of new spring growth is finished. That could be a full month after you start mowing. It looks like your lawn is a mix of fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Fescue remains green in the winter while KBG browns out in dormancy. It will all return to green soon. The fescue will do much better in the shade than KBG. If it is thin in the shade in July, you might want to over seed those areas with more fescue in late August. Where do you live? How often do you water? How high/low do you mow? How often do you fertilize? What do you use? And when?...See MoreHelp me like my home
Comments (56)We also have five children and a very long list of changes that we would love to make to our house if we had the money. We still have the ugly blue carpet that was in the house when we moved here 11 years ago so I feel your pain. If you really don't like the house, I agree with the suggestion not to put much money into it. Saving for a new home makes more sense if you don't see potential in this one. We love our home but every room still needs work. I wouldn't want to face all that if I hated the house. I have a few ideas. You mentioned that the tile is too bumpy to cover with self stick tiles. I wonder if you could spread self-leveling compound over the tile to make it smooth and then cover with the tiles? Home Depot carries three different types. I'm not sure how many bags you would need so it might get expensive if you needed more than one bag. I'm not sure if adding leveler on top might make it harder to remove the tile later. I would ask a professional before trying it. In our old house, we had a much smaller ugly tile entry than yours. I chipped it out with a hammer and chisel when I was eight months pregnant. Unfortunately, we had to rent a big grinder to remove the thin set afterwards. It created a lot of dust and took several hours. Some tiles just pop up and don't leave a mess. I guess you could try removing one in an area that you could cover with a rug if the tile breaks. Most tile stores carry tile that costs only 89 cents per square foot but I doubt it would be your favorite. I heard that carpet factories offer great discounts on large remnants or slightly imperfect carpet. Might be worth checking out if you want to do a temporary fix before you install wood floors. Enjoy your little ones. They are precious and of course, the memories you make with them are worth far more than having the prettiest house. I have to remind myself of that often....See MoreNewbie needs urgent help - refrigerator sticking out of panels?
Comments (13)Thanks for all the help! (I feel like such a newbie - I thought I checked off email notification of replies in my OP, but I guess I didn't, as I didn't get any, and then I couldn't find my own thread to see if there were any replies!) I'm adding some pics, so everyone can see what I'm talking about. They've offered to replace the 24 inch panels with 30 inch panels and build the over the fridge cabinet out to 30 inches. However, I think this might also look strange because the cabinet that is next to it is only effectively 16 inches before the corner. I think it would possibly look weird to have the fridge panels and over the fridge cabinet be 30 inches in depth, and then have a 16 inch wide cabinet be 24 inches in depth, and then turn the corner. Do you think that would look weird? What I think would look aesthetically most pleasing is for them to do the 30 inch panels and build out the over the refrigerator cabinet. I think they should also move out the cabinet next to it to 30 inches, so these are flush. But this means that they'd need to replace the cabinet around the corner with a less wide one to accommodate that cabinet being moved out. This would also be the most labor for them. The head carpenter that I spoke to this morning said that he wasn't sure the owner of the contracting company would agree to pay for the additional cabinet, in addition to all the labor. (The owner is on vacation this week, but will be back on Monday). I don't know how much to push for this. Like other posters have said, the other options are to just remove the panels. As I think I said in my OP, I did not know that there were going to be panels. We had planned to not have panels, so I'm highly irritated by the fact that I paid for this, even though I didn't even know about it. I did tell the carpenter today that if we did just decide to remove the panels, I'd expect them to refund me for the panels, since I'm not willing to pay for something that I didn't agree to in the first place and that ends up not being used. But now that I'm looking at it, I don't know that this would look any better, again, because of the narrow cabinet next to it. (Just to be clear, the layout I saw was before ordering was obviously not to scale, as it didn't look bad to have the refrigerator sticking out beyond the cabinet. But I think IRL, this will look strange.) The other option, I guess, is to leave it as is. I'd probably ask for compensation if I chose this. The spec on my fridge do not specify whether the 31.25 inches includes the door/handle or just is the carcass. The fridge is being delivered tomorrow, so I guess I'll find out. Would that affect your decision? Thanks for the help!...See MoreHelp- custom paneled fridge sticks out!
Comments (97)As rococogurl pointed out, design is not something anyone can just pick up and get right the first time. There are so many details, and a lot of math, haha! And, as she said, that is the beauty of these gw home forums! Laypeople like myself can garner a lot of knowledge and advice, both from professionals and from regular people who have learned from their mistakes. At the least, we can see what we don't know and can learn what questions to ask. I'm rebuilding a house, subfloor to roof. It's going to take ten years, unless I win the lottery or have a long lost relative leave me the family fortune, lol! Can I afford a KD (kitchen designer)? Are you kidding me?!?? It has nothing to do with not respecting the profession: I have immense respect for designers and the work they do. It has to do with what I can afford. This forum, and the others here on GW, have been invaluable! I've learned so much from all of you! Today I learned about refrigerator depths, stuff I wouldn't have thought of by myself. Thanks! And I'm glad Brittbelquist got the look she wanted without a huge expense!! YAY! :-)...See Moreraymondranch
