Rug advice please

I have been looking at this rug on our local Craigslist. I'm new to quality rugs and first time buying a used one. Is this authentic? Anything I should look out for other than visually inspecting it? The price is listed at $600

A Karastan is a wonderful machine made rug and they wear like iron. That is a great buy if it's in good condition and it should be. Make sure the fringe is in good condition, and there are no pet smells or stains and you will have yourself a gorgeous rug.

It is not an authentic Persian, if that is what you are asking. It's made in the USA, for one, and it's a Karastan.

But, Karastan rugs are very good rugs. It is wool, and it is 9X12, so $600 is right in the correct ballpark, if it's in good shape.

Turn it over and look for any signs of liquid stains. Get on your stomach and smell the rug for any bad smells, especially urine from cats or dogs.

I have rug #2 (though don't have it out atm due to repainting the room it was in)and it is very pretty in person. The base color is a bit more of a cooler green than it appears in the overstock pic online (on my monitor anyway). All the rugs you posted are nice, so think it all just depends on the overall look and color scheme you are trying to achieve.

Find one with a white back ground. Some of the highest level Persian rugs are MOSTLY white with the reds and blues used to create the details. They are STUNNING.

I love the colors and the design! As previous posters have stated, this is a machine made rug, not one that's hand knotted or hand tufted. I just replaced my Karastan (polypropylene ) after 14 years. The fibers had tamped down and the plastic insert used in creating the bound edge came out leaving the binding looking ragged. However, wool is a far better fiber, so this rug should hold up much better than mine did.

It may just be me or the lighting, but the carpet doesn't look very clean to me. I would try to talk them down on the price. The pattern is quite pretty, though.

That's a gorgeous rug and the price is fair (although it never hurts to offer a little less - Craigslist sellers should expect that). I will reiterate what has been stated above, and that is to make sure you give the rug "the sniff test." I would pass on any rug with detectable odors, having realized too late that a couple of rugs I bought from Craigslist sellers for my previous home smelled so bad that I just couldn't live with them. Also check the back of the rug for telltale stain markings.

If you go to look at the rug in person, I hope it's a winner! It does look to be, from the photo you shared.

The e-bay pictures shows a very beautiful rug. If the one offered to you looks like that then you've found a bargain.

I think the rug pictured in this post looks faded but that may not be how it looks in person.
