For something low and wide, the Wichurana Ramblers would work well. Their canes are long and very flexible, and so will be easy to train along the fence. I'm not sure how cold-hardy it is, but 'Mel's Heritage' has this growth habit and also repeat-blooms. It was bred from a Wichurana Rambler and a Tea-Noisette. David Austin also has three repeat-blooming Ramblers -- 'The Albrighton Rambler', 'Snow Goose', and 'Malvern Hills', and they also should be easy to train along the fence. You may also wish to consider adding some Clematis to your fence. Most climbing roses pause during the heat of Summer, but this is when the large-flowered type-3 Clematis really get going. They should be hard-pruned every Spring, as they bloom on new wood. That would make it easy when you want to prune and train the rose -- you won't have to worry about breaking any Clematis stems since they'll all be pruned back to a few inches from the ground, anyway. If you go with type-2 Clematis, I'd suggest planting them where they won't climb into the rose very much -- perhaps put the rose in the center, and use the type-2s at the very ends, and type-3s on either side of the rose. Of course, I don't know how long your fence is -- if it's only 20 feet or so, you might want to skip the type-2s altogether. :-) ~Christopher

I have to say that in my own view, chain link fences make very effective supports for just about anything. They are very strong and secure. You can hang watermelons and concrete blocks on them. The weave is convenient too. But yes, you need to have an understanding with your neighbor about who gets what. As to yard space, you'll really want to dig a bed at least a few feet out from the fence. For the vines that come out of the ground on your side, there should be no problem with your neighbors mowing. Eventually, they'll probably come out on both sides. I assume you understand the difference between primocanes and floricanes. That is, for most varieties of brambles, the vines that emerge in the first year (primocanes) won't fruit. They'll do that as floricanes their second year. Brambles also need a certain number of "chill hours" in the winter to fruit well. In zone 6, you'll be fine in that regard. If you're not planting bare root, then you may get some fruit in your first year.

Thanks for posting the above :-) In this area of the country, English ivy should be avoided. And to add to this caution, the ivy in your first photo has developed to the adult stage - it is setting flower buds which will bloom and be followed by berries/seeds that are eaten by birds and then dispersed all over the countryside, furthering the invasive issue. If you must keep the ivy in place, shear it back now to get rid of any adult foliage (non-lobed or heart shaped leaves compared to the pointy lobes of the juvenile form) and the flowers/berries the adult form will produce. That will at least curb some of the problem. If you need more privacy, replace the vine on the fence with an evergreen shrub. There are dozens that could work.
