DIY budget elegant bathroom, almost done: pics...
Comments (95)I'm very sorry I did not answer the questions from the last few years... I've been out of reno mode for a while :) It's probably too late, but here are the replies: @walkin_yesindeed - the vanity finish has held up just fine. However, it's not the original paint. We sanded and re-painted with new Ben Moore bathroom paint. No issues with dampness (we do run the fan for every shower, though.) @kirkhall - I have NOT been happy with the touted un-stainable-ness of the epoxy grout on the floor. I mean, it's better than regular grout, but it didn't stay white no matter how much I cleaned it. It looks fine, since the tile is multi-toned, but it's definitely not still white. The shower grout, however, has held up extremely well. @SparklingWater - I don't recall the demo being terribly difficult, but that may be because I knew what to expect from other parts of the house. It was tile over a dense cement. @MrsD - I think the grout color is standard white. @MayaEoff - Our tub is the standard 30" size....See MoreUpdate Bathroom on a Budget
Comments (10)Photo of floors to see if there's a dark color in the floor tile that could be picked up for the cabinet paint? One option is to find a chip that matches the tan tiles, then pick the lightest color on the chip for the walls and the darkest color for the mirror frame and cabinet. That would give you a high contrast look, not exactly the black and white of "modern farmhouse", but it would look coordinated. Another option is to paint the cabinet and walls as close to the white in the tiles as possible. Too bright white will make the tiles look dirty. Before finalizing your paint choice: Change out the beige frosted glass on the sconces if you can find white instead of beige glass. Use new "bright white" (not "soft white") LED bulbs with color temperature of 3500K....See MoreUpdating our small bathrooms on a budget
Comments (12)What is your budget because that is going to determine what you can achieve. While I am generally in the camp of keeping "retro" bathrooms which are true to the architectural style of a home, in my opinion there is NOTHING worth salvaging in your bathroom. Pardon me for being blunt but you have what appears to be a prefab bath/tub shower - lighting that is identical to the hideous fixture I had in my builder grade 1965 condo when I moved in - a vanity that is not particularly attractive and is basic slab door - again identical to the cheap cabinets I had in my condo :-). If you have the money for it, you could gut it and install a bathroom that is more to your taste while also respecting the architecture of the exterior. I just remodeled my bathrooms and while I opted for a more traditional bathroom inspired by Art Deco, I also admired some very modern bathrooms with walnut slab doors :-). But budget is going to determine the extent of what you can do. From a practical point of view, unless you really have a LOT of money saved, it is probably best to put any major renovations on hold until you have lived in your home for awhile. This will give you a sense of what your priorities are in terms of making your home functional and aesthetic as well as seeing exactly how much it costs each month as home ownership has some economic surprises. There is nothing wrong with your bathroom at the moment - it is clean and looks in good condition and you could jazz it up inexpensively if you have other priorities....See MoreLooking for feedback on the new master bathroom I'm designing. Comments (3)Thanks for your feedback! Here are the plans (they don't reflect the newest updates I made). We originally had walls around the toilet, but when I put it in Sketchup, it felt too enclosed and cut off the view of the mountains. Also, it felt very dated, like something that would have been done in the 90s. In terms of the closet, we really need/want the extra closet space. And we put the tub in the shower because we like the idea of having a "wet area" - which is sort of a new thing that's being done a lot these days. But open to your thoughts! We just wanted a view of the mountains from both the tub and the shower. Thank you!!!!...See Moreaprilneverends
