Did you look at the daylilies he registered? I assume that they looked different. Like humans, you can get very different children from the same parents. Even the same pod can, & often does, produce seeds with each seed producing a different looking daylily.

For example, here are two pictures of seedlings with the same parentage, but they look different. This is All Fired Up X Goldenzelle. The first has the coloring of All Fired Up but the eye shape is more of Goldenzelle. The second resembles Goldenzelle.

These two seedlings look very similar, but if you look closely, you can see some differences especially in the eye area. Both could be registered since they came from different seeds so their genetic make-up is not identical.

Some crosses yield more keepers that worthy of registration. I will probably be registering two from Sun Bear X Julie Newmar. There's no limit on the number of seedlings you can register from a cross.

I agree about crosses of the same parents yielding different size, bud count and bloom.
