What is the consensus on using this stuff as an organic matter addition to the lawn? It's got alfalfa and cracked corn but also a bunch of other stuff in the ingredients list.

Horse pellets are usually called cubes. They are the size of your thumb. That's why I always add (rabbit chow) when I talk about alfalfa. The reason for the molasses is that the vitamins and alfalfa taste bad. Real Purina Rabbit Chow probably has all those nutritional supplements, too. I don't have a problem with the supplements. Microbes are critters, too. They need their vitamins and minerals.

I get my cracked corn & alfalfa at TSC. Why not just the bags separately? Corn is always under $10.

@dc - The pellets are for horses. They come in multiple sizes. When I went looking for rabbit chow they only had 5 lb bags that were expensive. When I asked about larger bags they asked why not just get the "horse stuff."

Hey, Germ, I'm on your side here! I'm not a Monsanto troll! :-) I understand that the proponents of the chemical paradigm have hijacked agriculture and thwarted our understanding of the way chemical processes work in soil. But just because "N-P-K" has been the mantra of the chem-heads since the 50s doesn't mean we should shun the terms. Not to put too fine a point on your insistence on protein vs. Nitrogen, but we're talking about the same thing in different forms or stages. The dominant form of fixed N is protein. The process of mineralization converts protein into inorganic N (ammonium, nitrite or nitrate) so that plant roots can use it. I checked on my claim that corn meal was high in N. I should have said corn gluten meal-- it's about 10%. Get the big bag and a big plastic bin with a tight-fitting lid. Put tha alfalfa in the bin, and it will last for a few years. I've had a 50lb bag in a big Rubbermaid bin in my garage for three years. No poroblems. Enjoy.

tox, It's a good point, but target plant selectivity is a hallmark of herbicide development. What everyone wants is high effectiveness with only the target plant, and no effect on the crop being protected. For clopyralid, as an example, forage and grass hays are permitted a residual level of 500 ppm. We know that tomatoes are sensitive to levels of 30 ppb in the soil. If you couple that kind of effective selectivity with some environemtal persistence, then the stage gets set for someone, somewhere to have an issue. edit - To illustrate the point -- if the half life for degradation were 30 days (about the average for clopyralid), and the soil level were 10 ppm, then by my calculation it would take ~9 months for that 10 ppm to decay to a level of While farmers did use to love the persistent aspect, many are now questioning the desirability because of how their options can get cut when faced with a need for crop rotation. That hit ND wheat farmers when scab became an issue. I have heard anecdotally that WI dairy farmers in some areas are now prohibited from exporting their manures off-farm, and many are running out of places to keep the stuff. The cubes I bought were actually what we call hay "pellets". I checked the bag and no salt is listed, just molasses, some vitamins and minerals and alfalfa. I would never add large quantities at once again without composting it by piling up and wetting it, waiting until it cools or adding plenty of browns such as shredded paper or straw. Remember, you can catch the barn on fire with wet alfalfa hay. I was reminded of this the hard way. In the heat last week of 110, my husband left the water on to the peppers. Within hours they were nearly dead from the heat of the alfalfa rotting. I wish I had thought to stick a thermometer in the soil but I was in survival mode trying to cool them down. Three inches down in the "mulch" as I will call it because I laid them on so thick, the temps were literally steaming and would burn my hand! Where I put it on the other garden, it was thinner and never flooded. It has stayed cool and seems to be providing much need fertilizer. Could be a good way heat up soil in the Spring? Just given enough time to rot first, a few weeks?

Word to the wise--avoid the alfalfa horse cubes.

Er, not that *I* would ever make such a mistake of course... :-)

If that's what you can get, and it's pellets, it's probably just fine. Certainly there's nothing on the list that makes me nervy! Your lawn and gardens don't require the vitamins (plants make their own, as do most micro-organisms, or they get them easily from the environment), but they're not going to hurt anything. The additives are all in minor enough amounts that it won't be an issue.

You may find that the bags of just corn or just alfalfa are cheaper, and if so, buy those instead. I keep a bag of alfalfa on-hand for the roses, but partially discontinued use this year. At their first bloom, the roses bent over and touched the ground due to the number and weight of the blooms, so I've been over-feeding...
