Fremontodendron--should I water it?

I know that the fremontodendron wants no water once established. However, I planted mine last fall, so I'm assuming it's not established yet.

Should I simply leave it alone now that it's June? I have seen some leaves turn yellow and drop recently (it was last watered in April, I believe, and I haven't touched it since).

Woodies need at least 2 years to establish a vigorous root system.

Water it this year and next.

Water it today or you will lose it. It's desperate for water with this heat wave.

The Almanac is calling for a colder, snowier winter, at least in my neck of the woods. I'm so happy for the very cool, clear, sunny days we've had for the last week, I'm almost giddy. George, my fingers are crossed that the dike and sandbags around the sewage plant will hold and that the rest of the area won't experience too much damage. Hi Catherinet, I believe it might rot before it puts out any leaves. I would put it in some clay soil in a two gallon pot, submerge in your pond and see what develops. If you have fertilizer tabs, that would help and pebbles on top of the soil. Make sure your fertilizer tablets are on the bottom of the pot away from the Lily roots to prevent them from burning your roots. Best of luck to you.

Brandon, your query as to, is it a ''good candidate for such a hypothesis'' greatly exaggerate the importance of my whimsical notion (Unless you were being facetious. In which case, well taken!). Hardly a conjecture, let alone a hypothesis. Old dictionaries might have called it a flisk. I am aware that there is nothing in the copiously published phytochemistry of Parthenocissus that would indicate this route. In any event my fancy was the result of the observation of the rooting and shooting of pieces of trimmings in an unattended compost heap.

But don't go crazy with water. There is no need to be dropping water on it every 3 days. I'd water every other week.

I think it must depend on your soil. I lost three plantings, before I had the guts to watch the next planting apparently dying, and still not water it. In a few days it turned around and has not been touched since. One tree planted on a slope at the edge of a forest, grew tall and fell over down hill. I sawed off the trunk at about 4 feet, drove a steel fence post into the ground above the 4 foot thunk and used a come along to pull it up straight. The tree never missed a beat.
