We recently installed Carlyle II toilets in both bathrooms we've renovated. I was initially concerned about the lower water volume in the newer models, but I'll tell you that the Carlyle II is the best flushing toilet I've ever used. The 1.28 gallons of water turns out not be an an issue at all. This thing flushes anything and everything, first time, every time. The Double Cyclone design does indeed do a great job of washing the bowl down with each flush. I can't give you a first-hand comparison to the older G-Max version because we never had one of those. But my feeling is that if the waste disposal abilities are equal, and the II washes the bowl better with the newer Double Cyclone design, and the II uses 20% less water, why not get the II? And as chelsercat noted, there's a 1" difference in height; we wanted the "comfort height" in our toilets, so the II was what we were looking for. Also, if you look at the pictures side by side, the shape of the tanks is slightly different, and I prefer the slight rounded/bowed shape in the Carlyle II -- certainly not a major factor, but just one more issue that made me favor the II. -- Eric

I've had the Toto Vespin 11 installed for a few weeks now. It is bascially a skirted version of the Drake 11. Love the Sanigloss, and compared to my two other dual flush toilets seems to flush better and no streaking. Have to admit have also not cleaned it...appears sparkling clean! Though I wonder if using a bidet seat and the additional water that produces has any bearing on that? I guess it's the water in the tank, not the water in the bowl that has any bearing? I just notice, that there appears to be more water sitting in bowl than in my other two. So does that water get calculated into the 1.28 or the 1.6 number, or does that number reflect just the volume of water in the tank? If there are two volumes flushed together, I would assume the Vespin/Drake has a larger total volume...

If you are building a bathroom from scratch, definitely -- I cannot emphasize this strongly enough -- make sure that it has a grounded electrical outlet within a foot or two of the toilet at baseboard level. WHEN (it is not a matter of "if") you find that you can no longer live without an advanced toilet seat (also known as a bidet seat or Washlet -- but Washlet is a trademark of Toto so other makers cannot use that word to designate their product), your cost of installation will be significantly reduced if the electrical outlet is readily available. In the meantime, you can have one of the electrical outlets with built-in sensor night-lights installed, which will enhance nighttime visits to the loo. The inevitability that you will be getting an advanced toilet seat also may influence your choice of toilet itself. Once you have yours, you will find yourself disquieted when you travel and visit most American hotels and have to do without the amenity. But you can always travel to Japan, where approximately 100 percent of hotel rooms and better than 70 percent of private residences (nearly 100 percent of newly constructed private residences) have advanced toilet seats on every toilet. There are probably more advanced toilet seats in use in Japan now than TV remote controls, and the remarkable thing is that the product category is only about three decades old. We have a Toto Vespin II with an Inax Clessence advanced toilet seat; we chose those two units after much research, and because we travel at least twice a year to Japan (many relatives), and could ask real people real questions about their real opinions. We have recommended the same combination to several friends in America, who have followed our recommendation, and have been delighted with the outcome. We have moved around quite a bit for work. We are getting ready to start building our 8th home and have lived in 3 others. Our last 2 homes, because of location norms and resale, we opted for higher end finishes. We installed Toto toilets and were very disappointed. They were noisy and, while they looked nice, we are putting in Kohler due to reliability, functionality and they stand behind their products. A few years ago we had a problem with a chrome sink faucet that appeared to be tarnishing. This was in one of the 3 homes we did not build ourselves. Kohler mailed us a replacement without any issues. They are not the top end but we plan to get as much Kohler brand in our retirement home as we can find that fit s our needs.
