West Bend Penguin hot and cold

I am going to a family reunion about 3 hours away tomorrow. I'm trying to come up with something to take. My two sisters are taking bar cookies and brownies. There will be lots of desserts. I am thinging about a pasta salad with Italian dressing. I have a west bend penguin. I don't remember how to use it. If I put it in the refrigerator tonight and put the made refrigerated salad in the penguin tomorrow and wrap it in a towel and then put in an insulated bag would it keep? Maybe put ice cubes in a plastic bag around it. It is hot here.

If it spends the night in the fridge and then you pack it as you describe while it rides in an air conditioned car, it should be fine. Do you have any of the plastic blue ice thingys that you freeze and then put in the insulated bag for cold? If not, half fill a few water bottles (that have tight fitting caps), freeze them overnight, and use those upright in the bag.

At the risk of stating the obvious, leave off the dressing until you're ready to serve it. There's normally no protein in a pasta and veggie salad to worry about spoiling but if there is something (like chopped ham), also keep that separate (and next to your cold source in the bag) until serving time. Have a good time.

I'm not familiar with the west bend penguin. What I would do would make up your pasta salad so the flavors could start melding together and then put it in ziplock bags in the refrigerator overnight. Put the bags in an ice chest covered with ice for the trip. It will be fresh and cool at your picnic.

Maybe not the fall poem you had in mind but very apropos of recent events. I actually had a year when a tremendous amount of fruit set (for Oklahoma) on Brandywine, probably in 2001 or 2002. I had six plants, and each set about 6 to 8 to 10 fruits in spring and then set more in fall. We had so many ripe BWs at one time that I gave several Brandywines away to friends. They've all been begging for a second Brandywine tomato since then, but I haven't had that kind of production since then. I remember I planted very, very, very early and covered them up on plenty of cold nights. I'm guessing we had a long, mild spring because I remember having very high fruitset on all my tomatoes and peppers that year. So, I think it likely it was 2002....because DS graduated from high school that year and I remember the May weather was so 'cold' that Tim's dad came from Pennsylvania for Chris' graduation and was expecting hot weather and instead had weather here just like what he had back in PA. He was very disappointed in our Oklahoma weather that year. The following year he didn't come to visit until July and it was dry, drought year and beastly hot and he loved it. (The tomatoes, however did not, although they had great flavor.) Jay, I could have sworn I read your post yesterday! I guess the garden gremlins ate it. My BW crosses are producing nice big tasty tomatoes and more of them per plant than BW ever did. It is still early in the season, but I'm thinking Gary O'Sena and Dora are keepers. JD's Special C-Tex is also producing well and its fruit are somewhat larger than IS's and CPs although it seems very similar otherwise. All of them 'meet or exceed' my flavor requirements. Dawn

Cars you have block heaters in them when you live in severe cold weather. If you have a garage you park it in that. If not, then you plug it in all night and then the fun begins where you go in and open a very stiff cold door and start the car to get it heating and go out and start scraping the windows. Oh, but when you work, not all places have spots that you can plug your car in and so all day it would sit there and you go out and pray that it would start up for you. Or sometimes all night long or evening, depending on shift you are working. We had a heated garage in last place we lived in as we had two big dogs and my mom wouldn't let them stay in at night, they could come into kitchen during the day. They had 3 old mattresses to sleep on, they actually had a great place out there. yes, there are unfortunately people that leave their pets outside or they are permanent outside pets. Some kinds of dogs are meant for outside so they will grow really thick heavy coats and if brought inside will sweat and pant and pant and pant tons. We would see our neighbour have one dog inside and the other dog outside. It really pained us that they did that. Pets can survive to a certain extent. But no, they can't that cold out, cats especially. Pipes you cover them up, wrap the outside taps up. You do feel the cold in your house and heat is up and fireplaces are burning away. I remember standing on our floor heaters when growing up and the heat would come up my nightie and talk about nice and warm. Oh, so nice. Our dog used to go right on top with his belly and get warm, he was a toy manchester dog. When we put him out to do his business, he would run fast and run fast back inside screaming in pain as his ears would freeze. My mom tried to tie a scarf on him but he still suffered. It was terrible hearing him in such pain.

I live in Georgetown, TX and was hoping that someone had answered you! I've just planted a bunch of Sempervivums a couple of weeks ago, but would like to add other plants like Echiveria to my rock garden. I am a 'do as little as possible' gardener, so I'm looking for things that I can plant, forget, and let our watering system take over. It's too early to tell if the Semps will thrive in this heat, I think.

Personally I would make the salad, store in fridge in a Tupperware or similar sealed container. Leave in that for transportation. I would surround the container with blue ice frozen bars or zip lock bags of ice. If you have the insulated bag you mentioned put it all in there. Once there transfer to the penguin. The penguin doesn't seal so I definitely would not transport in it. I think that you put ice in the base of the penguin and the contents in a separate part is that correct? I have done this frequently and I have lots of the blue ice packs in various sizes kept in the freezer for when I need them. If you have a dollar store or big Lots they are very cheap. I have had ziplock baggies leak so I would not risk contamination of the salad by putting it in them. That's also why I prefer the blue ice.

Thanks everyone and Raven and adellebedella you are right. I need to put the salad in a Ziploc bag or Tupperware. It has been so long since I took anything for a long distance I wasn't thinking. I think I can safely pack up the salad to keep cool.
