Help! Emergency surgery on moon cactus!
Comments (2)I'm growing a few "Dragon Fruit" plants, and a couple plants has that same conditions a few years ago--some of the flesh at the base rotted and only that center stick was left. I, too, cut off the rotted flesh and left the center stick alone, but I didn't uproot the plants from the ground. Even with the damage, the plant have grown fine, the upper "leaves" continued to grow and it eventually gave me fruits. The Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is grafted to a "Dragon Fruit" species, so I think your plant would do fine. Dragon Fruits are hardy, in my climate anyway. In my opinion, what you did is correct. Let the cut cure for couple days, a mist of water in the root would help I think so it doesn't dry out and damage the root. Then re-pot it. If that fails, you can always re-graft the Gymnocalycium to another "Dragon Fruit" if you know someone who is growing it. Or simply buy another, :)....See MoreMy moon cactus is dying!?

Comments (3)Touch the lighter green area to see if it is softer than the rest of the plant. If it is soft, it could be rot. If not soft, nothing to worry about. Edited to note you said that area was firm, so maybe it is just lighter from being below the soil line. You have a grafted cactus, in other words, there are two different types of cacti here, the top being Gymnocalycium mihanovichii friedrichii, and the rootstock being Hylocereus. These are generally not long lived, but some have managed to keep them going for a few years. A common first cactus purchase. Christopher...See MoreMoon cactus HELP
Comments (4)I missed your second part of your question. It looks like the peaty mix it is in is completely dried into a brick. If this is the case then when you watered it, it probably didn't get the roots wet at all and just slid around the outside of the brick. Sorry for your loss. It's always sad but plants die sometimes. Try again later (with a better cactus, in my opinion) I very much dislike grafted cactus, not sure exactly why....See MoreDesirai
