my moon cactus might be rotting?

The bottom of my cactus is a much lighter green then the rest of the cactus and i'm not sure what is causing this. The bottom of the cactus still feels firm it just looks lighter. Is this rot? I only water the plant around once a month so I don't think its from over watering. This part of the cactus is normally covered by soil in case that helps.

Touch the lighter green area to see if it is softer than the rest of the plant. If it is soft, it could be rot. If not soft, nothing to worry about. Edited to note you said that area was firm, so maybe it is just lighter from being below the soil line.

You have a grafted cactus, in other words, there are two different types of cacti here, the top being Gymnocalycium mihanovichii friedrichii, and the rootstock being Hylocereus. These are generally not long lived, but some have managed to keep them going for a few years. A common first cactus purchase.

Hi, I would cut that "root" right up to the cut you already made....the white part looks dry and dead and is therefore useless. Let the whole thing callous over before replanting it in new soil. I believe Jeff already addressed this in another thread. Nancy

If it is squishy then it is rot ... if not it might be a fungal infection on the skin i had that before on the skin of a cactus but i stopped watering from the top and it went away ... for the first one it is either rot of the skin getting woody from age

I honestly have no idea what soil it's in, I just popped into my mums green house and found the driest soil I could find, woops! I'll defiantly look into getting some decent stuff for it, It's survived 10 years with my plant-killer mother so i'd hate to be the one that kills it! Any idea how long it'll take for it to go back to a healthy color if it is just deprived of sunlight? and how long it'll take to grow back into a normal shape? (it looks a bit patchy)

I don't think it is sunburn. The discolored side is the side that has always faced the house. The other side, facing the sun, does not look like that. I pressed the discolored spot, and it is a little softer than the normal colored areas. Any suggestions as to what I should do to get it back in good condition?
