Looking for a source of nitrogen... is this a good one?
Comments (14)Nitrogen is a gas. The best place to get Nitrogen from is things that are alive -- their cells still have a lot of that gas captured. You can plant legumes and cut them down halfway through flowering when the N is most available. The roots will have the N-fixing bacteria still in the soil, and the plants you cut down you can use for mulch. That's a double dose of N. You can pee on your garden, as long as you're not taking any meds that could be in your pee. You can add kitchen scraps into holes in your garden as you transplant, deeper than would attract critters. You can add blood meal, but that would definetly attract critters. There are lots of things you can do. I'd reccommend pee, pit composting, and planting legumes....See MoreHorse feed?
Comments (3)Word to the wise--avoid the alfalfa horse cubes. Er, not that *I* would ever make such a mistake of course... :-) If that's what you can get, and it's pellets, it's probably just fine. Certainly there's nothing on the list that makes me nervy! Your lawn and gardens don't require the vitamins (plants make their own, as do most micro-organisms, or they get them easily from the environment), but they're not going to hurt anything. The additives are all in minor enough amounts that it won't be an issue. You may find that the bags of just corn or just alfalfa are cheaper, and if so, buy those instead. I keep a bag of alfalfa on-hand for the roses, but partially discontinued use this year. At their first bloom, the roses bent over and touched the ground due to the number and weight of the blooms, so I've been over-feeding......See MoreVitamin D3
Comments (25)You're welcome, yes among several of its benefits it helps with joint function. One of the doctors I know through work combines holistic medicine with his conventional Internal Medicine Practice. My DH now sees him for his primary care and the Krill oil is just one of several things he's suggested to help boost my DH's immune system. I read up on it and found it's good for a lot of things including joint issues and started taking it too. A plus is that it works wonders with skin as well (similar to Vitamin E but better). I should note that the capsules are made with organic gelatin, so of course because of their texture, they may stick to each other but the Vitamin D has no oder that I've noticed....See MoreCan Either of These Be Used as a Lawn Fertilizer?
Comments (8)Both would be fine for a gentle feeding, and the alfalfa is applied for the growth hormones more than the nitrogen anyway. Using alfalfa, 10 pounds per thousand would be great, up to about three times per year. Don't call it a good feeding, though, as it only provides about 0.2 pounds of nitrogen per thousand square feet. Going higher, however, overdoses the hormones. For the layer pellets, I'd be comfortable going all the way up to 50 pounds per thousand (1 full pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet). Monthly, if you so desire, although I tend to recommend taking June and July off (organics applied in early August won't be available until August 20th at the earliest anyway, which is getting close to the correct time). By contrast, soybean meal would be a 1 pound N per thousand feeding at 14 pounds per thousand, but these other two look really good as soil conditioners and ways to slowly increase organic matter....See Moremorz8 - Washington Coast
