Graduation Anniversary-------78 years!

I realized yesterday that today is the 78th anniversary of my high school graduation. ( I was 15!! ) In 1938 my family was still severely impacted by the depression. So-- in spite of several scholarships there was no way I could go to college.

I should pay tribute to the Dominican nuns who educated me. They were ecumenical, kind, and tough educators. Although I later had more education, it is to them I owe the fact that I was able to hold down jobs that would normally require a college degree.

In looking back I can't help but muse about all of the changes I have lived through, some good and some bad.

Just an old lady's thoughts on a quiet Sunday morning.

That's a long time. You were only 15 when you graduated? That was young. Congratulations to you. How fortunate you were to have caring teachers.

My mother graduated from high school in 1935. She is almost 99. Her mind is quite sharp ( she has her fuzzy moments) and she still lives independently with some help from me and my son.

Congratulations, Sue! Wow, it's been four years already. I really enjoyed reading about your activities and the direction you hope to take with your juris doctorate. Sounds like you've got some interesting things lined up for after the Bar also. Job very well done! DH also went to law school at night...took him 5 years. It was a long haul but so worth his efforts. He was a high school math teacher in Baltimore before law school so it was a big change for him too. Keep us posted. Good luck with the Bar! /tricia

Can I jump back in to add more of my thoughts on graduation announcements? DS graduated from high school 9 years ago. Being our firstborn, we went the announcement route everyone else around us seemed to be going with: buying the regular, formal, pricey ones with the name cards, tissue and inner envelopes, etc. Frankly, they were boring and all basically the same. I have to admit that when I receive one from a friend's and family's kid like that, I read them and then drop them in the shredder, keeping just the photos if there was one. I'll bet I'm not the only one who does this. And, I still can't figure out why anyone wants to include a name card. We did with DS, but even he thought is was "silly". Nine years later his little sis is graduating and I love her announcements and so does everyone else, including her! A simple photo card, with two casual photos of her (one in her western hat with our mountains in the background and one a beautiful, casual head shot with her smiling). There's also two pics of beautiful flower close-ups that she loved and since she was designing it, she chose what she wanted. In the middle, just her name and the day she graduates. On the back is just a beautiful quote that she loves and that's very meaningful to her and a big blank space where she could write a personal message. That's it. We've already received several other personally designed announcements this year and we love them and prop them up to enjoy. I don't see them as a cheap alternative, but rather as a more personal, special choice. Anyhoo, just my own opinion on high school graduation announcements. Oh, and BTW, we taught our kids at a very young age that all gifts received deserve (and got) a thoughtful, handwritten note mailed to the giver within one week. Starting at three years old, I had them dictate what they wanted to say and then they signed it themselves. Many times what they had to say was pretty hilarious, but I felt that if it came from their hearts, that's all that mattered. And, no one cared if their "signatures" at three or four years old were written across the entire note, sideways and were just a happy scribble (LOL)! Lynn

Hi Kids, Thanks for starting this thread, saramynn. We also have a graduation in May, and have been trying to come up with somthing as a gift. When I think of a graduation gift I like to think of something that will have meaning to the graduate throught the years and remind them of their accomplishments each time they see it. That being said, I'm not crazy about a gift of technology just because of it's short life span. Money is always a safe bet but does not have that personal touch. I think I like sherrmanns idea of the Waterford crystal. Even if it was a smaller piece and then give an additional gift of cash. Thanks Kids, now I have a direction to go in. Curious about what you mean by hoping it prepares him for a job working in a resort-do you mean as a college side job or as a career? I think any program that helps a kid learn responsibility is a good one. While this sounds like it's all fun & games, it really does teach skills that translate into real world skills. It's not all about white water rafting, it's about learning to work as a team and knowing what your skills can bring to the successful outcome of the trip. There are many careers that focus on outdoor adventures, and not everything requires a college degree. I know of many successful people who didn't go the education path, instead went the technical/vocational path and are making 6 figure incomes without any college debt. On the other hand, my kids who went into social sciences (social worker and early education instructor) needed the minimum of their BS and still only make $40K/yr. But my son who is a self taught chef makes more than his social worker sister. In light of the recent scandal of the parents paying for their kids to get into school by faking it, it goes to show that not all kids are college material. I didn't push my kids to go, but helped those that did (I was not able to fully fund my daughters education so she had to get loans-oddly I made too much for her to qualify for grants, but not enough to fund her schooling and scholarships were out of the question even though she tried hard to get them). The other two who didn't go, and who also struggled with HS, ended up doing well on their own. They're smart and learned a lot of life experience working for DH and I that helped them to succeed without college. I wish the best for your son. I think this NOLS program sounds like something he could get something out of. Might wake him up and realize he's going to have to actually WORK to make his way in the world. I'm afraid too many kids think they're just going to be able to go out and land a job and make $80K/yr with no problem. I know of kids who went to college who think that way and the reality of the situation was that since they just got liberal arts degrees didn't guarantee them a job.

Amazing! Just like you! I was not even a twinkle in my parents eyes then, in fact they may not have known each other then lol. I don't remember their year of marriage. Great milestones you have marked.

Happy graduation year. My grad year was 74 years ago, but I was a week away from my 18th birthday at the time, and we are both still here to remember those days and what the times were like then. Very different from now. Keep on with your stories; I think everyone needs to know and appreciate what it was like then.

We are benefiting from your education, too, Seniorgal! Do you have a few more memoirs in mind, ready to type up for our enjoyment?

My DM had such a good education in her one-room school in rural Rhode Island that when her family moved to the city, the high school didn't know where to place her. She'd already completed their requirements, but she was only thirteen. She, too, had responsible jobs that today would not be open to anyone without a college degree.

Not to take anything away from you, or from my DM, but...what's happened to make today's HS diploma so "worthless"?

Last year (2015), I attended my 61st high school reunion. It was the last one - too many of us have passed on to continue this tradition. The remainder of us have been invited to attend the reunion of a younger class.
