yesterday's organizing brag
Comments (25)Yeah! I took down the Christmas tree and it's only January 8...my usual target date is Valentines Day but since I lost my job, I have no excuse. The tree is 9' so I have tons of decorations. It took me 2 days but I was very methodical trying to think ahead to next year: I bought smaller storage boxes (found them at Big Lots for cheap) so they are easier to retrieve from high shelves and when I decorate I just get one box out at a time (e.g. get box of lights down put lights up; get box of balls down put balls up, etc) I packed like things together, even getting anal (e.g. red balls together in one box, gold in another). I made large labels (5" X 7") listing the catagory and items in the box, used large font, and stuck them to the side of the box for easy reading next year (e.g. TREE LIGHTS: 15 strings of garland lights; 2 strings interior tree lights; 3 extension cords; 1 power strip) I included tips/lessons learned at the bottom of the label (e.g. put garland lights vertical instead of around the tree) I put the light weight boxes on high shelves and heavy boxes on the bottom. I know this is a "duh" but in the past I have used large storage boxes and they were all heavy by the time they were packed Here is a link that might be useful: Some of the smaller storage boxes...See MoreOrganizing the Car
Comments (22)I try to keep my car pretty spare: * Maps (in pockets on back of seats) * Kleenex * Clear plastic folder full of coupons (can't use 'em when they're at home!) * Gallon size zipper baggie containing napkins & plasticware (glove box) * Tire pressure gauge (glove box) * Flashlight (glove box) * Car's registration & other info (glove box) * Window scraper (during winter) * Umbrella * Paper grocery bags (for 5 cent credit at store) * Tarp (Whenever I didn't have it, I have greatly missed it!) When our dog was still alive, we kept a leash in each car at all times, in addition to the one in the house. We also added a jug of water and bowl to the car when we brought the dog. If we're going on a road trip, I add: * Music CDs * Spray window cleaner & cleaning rag (for windows) * Eyeglass cleaning spray & microfiber cloth (for my own specs) * Snacks * Neck pillow & sleep mask (for naps) Everything else is in my purse. I have a Swiss Army Knife. Tape measure. (I'm a quilter.) Solar calculator. Hand lotion year round. Sunscreen in the summer. I have a small zipper pouch that I call my "survival pack." In it, I keep all the tiny stuff that would get lost in the bottom of my purse: tiny Blistex, tiny antibiotic ointment and (regular size) bandages, a few cough drops, single use eye drops, tiny nail file, tampons, tiny tube of ibuprofen, etc. I wouldn't want to leave all those toiletries in the car, in case the hot sun melted something. Don't have the cell phone and all its paraphernalia. Hadn't thought about the phone book. I tend to do all my errands in the same places, but it might be nice to have. Thanks for the idea!...See MoreLet's see if we can make a list of 100 favorite Organizing Tips..
Comments (117)I’ve only just discovered this board but what a great thread! Building on Raye Smith’s suggestion, go round your house with your smartphone or camera. Take an overall picture of each room in each direction, then close ups of any smaller stuff, closet and drawer contents, identifying marks/serial/models numbers on appliances/TVs/other electronics, etc, etc. You can do this over several days if necessary. When you are done, add labels to each photo indicating what it’s of (Tommy’s room, master closet, jewellery box, etc) and upload the pictures to the cloud or copy to a flash drive and store in your safe/safe deposit box. Hopefully, you will never need it but in case you ever need to make an insurance claim, you won’t have to rely on memory. If you can manage it, update the pictures annually....See MoreYour ideas for organizing cold weather gear?
Comments (7)Hi there Lori, I had a similar challenge and my hall closet is small! It had become so difficult to find items in that when I finally got it fixed I found I had lots of duplicates. This is what works for me: I have a small hall closet. I first assigned my closet a "role" I decided it would be used for the following: - Coats (only those we use regularly - special item coats like ski jackets went to the storage room) - Hats, gloves, scarves, - Sunscreen - umbrellas - outdoor workout gear (pedometer etc) - Lint brushes (we have a child of the furry variety too) - Emergency response kit (ie natural disaster) - Dog leash - Few outdoor toy items (bubbles, chalk, etc) - "to go center: dry cleaning, items for repair, small bag for donations." I bought a hanging shoe rack (the kind with cubbies) and labeled each 'shelf' within the rack. My DH and I each have our own cubby on the top, followed by lint brushes, sunscreen, pedometer and umbrellas), etc etc and then I use the lower cubbies for our 3 year old. When people get home I make them put their item in the respective cubby. This has worked so wonderfully because we all know where our stuff is and the closet stays clean. I hope you get the idea of what I'm saying and it works for you. If it would be helpful I can take a picture as well. Good luck! Laurie P.S. The hanging shoe/sweater racks work wonders elsewhere too. I also have one in our spare bedroom that holds our Iron, buttons, mending supplies, plug in air freshners, and spare shampoo and other toiletries for guest baskets. I have one in my 3 year old son's room too and use it to hang his shoes (so he can reach and put them back,) as well as pants....See MoreWalnutCreek Zone 7b/8a
