Key West (a yellow/gold) might be good there. Mine received several hours of direct sun and went really gold last year. The Library has a few pics of it - it's a big one!

Holy cow, bragu! I had no idea there were so many. Sadly, I won't have time to look all those up before I leave in less than a day. Maybe I will have to wait on this purchase. (though I am not sure I can, once I get an idea I obsess til I can do it)

That Sunpower is very eye catching. The form would be a nice change. Am I correct in thinking it is much shorter, or is it the angle of the shot? Or just young?

I just looked it up, and this nursery stocks
both Sun Power and Key
West. Both are
listed as giant. I wonder if all vase shaped varieties are giant. It would be
great to have something taller than it is wide, but I suppose that is not
something that exists.

I really like the form of Sunpower. Plus the
pointed leaf shape with a slight twist
would give me variety with the leaf forms I have currently too.

What do you think about the midday sun exposure I mentioned? Would that be too much for
a gold hosta? I lost a big central branch off the zen-trimmed pine this spring.
The Frances Williams already is showing a bit of fading.

Besides moving the Elegans, I have a Jimmy
Crack Corn planted there that would probably be too similar in color. I would
need to move that out as well. That would not get the height I want either.

I am thinking of buying a small dark leaved
shrub for nearby that would make a good contrast with the gold. Maybe a sambucus
if there is something that stays short. I have not had time to look that up
yet.

I have Krossa Regal and Sagae together in our front bed, and they've only been there three years (I transplanted them in late summer 2013 from quart- and gallon-sized buckets with several shoots). They're massive this year. The only thing I've done in that area is mulch and the first year I used some Hollytone on the Pachysandra.

Sagae is somewhat new to me (3 years), but I've had Krossa Regal for over a decade now and it's been a good grower, even in full shade. It seems to be even happier now that it's in bright shade with an hour or so of sun.

All three plants are of the same age. Sun Power is not so tall as Krossa Regal. At least in my garden.

I second jajoana in regard to Sunpower and Krossa Regal, same situation here in regard to size.

I have Sun Power (4 th year from a 1 Gallon plant), it has growing well, but much slower than Sagae and Regal Splendor, in the same bed. It takes sun well (~ 3-4 hr of early afternoon sun). Shorter than the other vase shaped ones. This was taken last year. It has not taken the full vase shape.

A couple of my favorite vase shaped hostas:

Montana aureomarginata, grows super fast (too fast for me as I had to move other neighboring plants away) and takes mid day sun really well (it gets all morning until 2 pm). This is the 3rd year from a 2-eye division from The Land of Giant)

Blue Hawaii, tall and vase shaped, beautiful large leaves. It gets some morning sun

Ebb Tide (narrow version of Montana aureomarginata), ordered from the Land of Giant. Its leaf shape is by far my favorite. This was taken a couple of years ago.

There are a number of additional upright hostas that aren't on the list yet. One that might work very well for you is Fluctuans. I added it 2 years ago, and it's already huge and gorgeous. It's very blue, and holds it's color well into the summer months.

I also have Fluctuans Variegated in my garden, the plant is over 25 years old, a sport of Fluctuans. This one has become wildly popular (and for good reason) has since been renamed Sagae. It's a sport of Fluctuans, which is a species hostas, so should technically be written fluctuans.

Gold Regal - gets a lot more gold with sunlight & as season progresses.

Interesting to see this thread pop up again. I opted for a tall gold instead: Sun Power. It's been planted 3 years now, and has not done much of anything. HOWEVER, I notice that this year the leaves are larger. So maybe it's done with sleeping and creeping, and is moving on to leaping. Hope so.

I still need a tall blue for another spot, though. Will probably just pick up a Krossa Regal somewhere. The narrower leaf form would be sufficiently different from the rounded leaves of the others in that small bed.

Awakening Angel is another very nice, very blue upright hosta. It's supposed to be a medium, but is definitely a large in my garden. Phoenix is another nice upright blue, slightly smaller than AA, but an excellent grower, quick to multiply, and very pleasing in both plant habit and leaf shape. Both of these hold their blue coloration well. Will try to post a longer list of blues of all sizes at some point.

I did, but lack a digital camera or a home computer (think Luddite). I have seen some nice photos of fluctuans on this forum recently, don't remember which thread it was.

I don't know what the problem is with your Krossa Regal but this has competition from a maple and I couldn't be happier with it.

I hated Sun Power for 3 or 4 years. Then it got better, and now it's gorgeous.

If you're still looking for a large blue vase, and willing to wait, how about Komodo Dragon? I love Five ' oclock Shadow if you don't mind subtle variegation. It's been a fast .grower.
