Tryin2grow -- another odd rug story
Comments (13)tryin2grow: I think the local rug dealer is very respected in the industry and it seems that he's one of the main dealers that designers work with in this area. Maybe that's not enough of an endorsement but I thought it was a good sign. He was speaking in terms of quality--that when they see the rugs some are A, B or C. These would be C and he would reject them. He pointed out the wide bands of color variation in the field, as opposed to the more subtle striations. I didn't realize that your SF wholesaler had access to these rugs too. I thought you were talking about the Due Process Stable Trading guy and his rugs. valinsv: Oh no. I hope you haven't been following it too closely. I feel like I could write a book on how NOT to go about decorating or buying a rug. I think my biggest problem is that I'm so afraid to make a mistake that I don't make any decisions. I have the luxury of starting from scratch so I started with the rugs. I think I'm very close now only because I've had to change my thinking about the color scheme. Costco Home is different from regular Costco in that it only sells furniture, linens, accessories, etc. The rug department is an independent vendor, a former rug store. oceanna, Costco Home is in Kirkland at 120th Ave. I don't think there are very many nationally; it might even be the only one in the country. The choice isn't between gold and blue but that's a good point about wanting something that adds warmth. I've linked the rug site below although when I spoke with the guy at Costco Home, he claimed that the rugs were from the city of Jaipur. He wouldn't commit to these being from the Jaipur Rug company although the Costco Home rugs were tagged with the same names and colors used by Jaipur Rugs. The names are changed on the Costco site. Here is a link that might be useful: Jaipur rugs...See Morewell fought this heat again today. and a few pictures again.
Comments (3)Your Woman at the Well seems to open flatter than in many pics I've seen. It may be due to Jean's TLC, but maybe also because of the heat. Here we have both heat and dryness, and the season is starting to look like a wipeout. Extra cold winters and extra hot summers--not my idea of an ideal climate....See MoreCan these roses do well again after a year of complete neglect?
Comments (12)Definitely go ahead and clean up the old mulch, get rid of any diseased material, any nasty old leaves. Put down fresh clean mulch. But personally I would not actually spray with anything yet. I would wait until it's closer to spring. The deal with winter in the South (even the upper south) is this: many roses really don't go fully dormant at all. They winter over like other bushes, and can even put on some new growth in nice temperatures. But it's still winter, and we could still get a killing frost at any point. My approach is to just sort of not stress them. Don't feed them, don't put oils or sprays on them, just let them do their thing, whatever they want to do. They will make it through the winter fine. As you probably have realized, in the South the trick with roses is getting through the summer, not the winter. I've never lost a rose to winter. It's all about summer: disease pressure, water issues, etc....See MoreWell, I won’t do that again (brown butter story)
Comments (8)Melting butter is easier. Put it in a Pyrex custard cup (up to 5 tbsp) and do 20 seconds on high. Let it sit. Do another 20 sec. Let it sit. If it hasn't melted completely in its own heat, zap it again for 10 sec. until its melted. I'm too old school to want to MW brown butter, but desperation calls, right? I learned to make it in a little enamelled butter pot on the disk above the pilot, then, post pilots, on low. It's much easier in a 1 qt pot on induction (the butter pot is too small for induction--or maybe it would work on "full surface"). I just can't wrap my head around the MW, though it sounds like it worked well enough for the beans. Thanks for the laugh at your tag line. I have been warned!...See Moreavedon_gw
