1st blooms on Nelly Moser, newbie here!

I have been posting on the roses forum for a few years and now thought I'd see what's going on over here at them Clematis forum! I planted 3 clematis last year (spring 2015) and they did nothing all year so I thought they didn't make it but much to my surprise all 3 came up from the ground this spring and now I have a few blooms and lots of buds!

I planted Nelly Moser (this one pictured, I believe), Elsa Spath (which my daughter helped me pick out by name only thanks to Elsa from Frozen ;) ) and a Ville de Lyon.

This years I've purchased a few more; Blue Multi, Bee's Jubilee, Rouge Cardinal, Jacmanii, and Venosa Violacea. I am going to be patient and not expect to see any blooms of these until spring 2017 if they make it.

Anyone have any ideas as to why the lower leaves on Nelly are yellowing?

I'm a fairly new clematis grower, planted a TINY (long story, mail order) Nelly Moser Fall 2014. With a hope and a prayer, was SO surprised it lived and grew spring 2015. Other things from same on line company did NOT come back. It grew last year, a couple vines. I cut it back to 18-20" as instructed so it would form a good root base that will pay off in the long run. This may not apply to you because you may have bought a much bigger, hardier/older plant in the first place. This year, It is looking really healthy and I was rewarded with my first (only so far) bloom.

Last summer, I bought a lovely lavendar (no ID) clematis in bloom with 4+ buds yet to open. It tripled in size and is GORGEOUS and profuse this spring. Other clematises purchased from Bluestone Perennials put in Fall 2014 are growing and flowering with a few blossoms this spring.

Is your plant mulched? How often do you water? Those would be the first things I would look at as far as yellowing of leaves

Val, thanks so much for your comments! Your clematis look great! It has been really dry lately and I forget to water that area and I have not mulched that area yet so you are probably correct on both accounts as to the yellowing. I will get the mulching done today!

Mine were not big at all and came up from nothing this year which really surprised me since I thought they were goners. I will have to figure out the groups and such so I can prune correctly.

Here is a photo of my Elsa Spath that just had her first blooms, so pretty!

Very nice clematis! Very healthy looking! Right... the way you are pruning yours, it is flowering on new wood. By doing that you are missing out on the early larger flowers. I don't prune my group 2's down to any particular height. I just prune out the dead wood for the most part. I will at times (not every year though) trim the very top down (in the spring) just a little when I do it... maybe a foot. It all depends on how it is looking. Right... in the spring group 2's do look like a mess with the dead leaves and tangled vines. You can spend considerable time and a back ache grooming them to perfection. :) It's a tangled maze! I've accidently cut off live portions at times. :) I trim off or rub the dead leaves in between my fingers to get rid of them. Finding dead wood from live wood... Yes, you wait until you see the buds swell up and you know which parts are dead and which are live. Some of the dead ones may be dead altogether or just dead down to a certain point... so depending on the situation... prune out the dead ones completely or prune out the dead section down to a swelling live bud. Some vines will find their way up the support all by themselves, but I do as you stated for some... as the plant is growing I PLACE the vines where I want them as they are growing up the support. You guide them and they will take hold fast. If you start treating yours like a group 2, the majority of vines will already be in place next year.

These clematis were previously on trellis in the pots and were cut down and sold at the end of season. I haven't had much luck growing clematis from bare root, so I was waiting for this moment! I have two others that I am waiting to bloom to identify. One is dark pink, but with less petals and the other one has some buds. They have grown quite a bit since I brought them home. Do you think I should plant them in the fall or wait until spring?

Around here type 2 prune clematis often get killed back to the snow line, so a hard prune certainly won't hurt her, and as Sheila said, will delay bloom to a bit later. I never get a second bloom on any of my type 2's, and don't know if you are likely to this year with a delayed first bloom. It may just be my growing season is too short for a second bloom. You can cut them all down (I usually cut to an inch or so above a bud pair) or if you leave a few stems you should get some early bloom on the old stems followed by bloom on the new growth from hard-pruned stems. You can prune back the older stems right after bloom. Thanks for the reminder to get out there and clean up one of my older, twiggier type 2's.

Much too early here!! Clematis armandii is in full bloom and the montanas and other atragenes will begin soon but the large flowered hybrids will not be producing a show until sometime in early May. Got a few buds forming but I don't expect to see anything for several more weeks.
