What do you miss about your childhood?
Comments (44)I miss having my siblings around. We all shared a room-some of us 2 in a bunk bed. I miss us all sitting around the kitchen table at dinner time and my Dad making Sunday breakfast. I miss going to my Grandparent's house and I miss their Scottish brogue. I miss my Grandpa showing off my Grandma's china cabinet and all that was in it to any new friend you brought to the house. I miss his dancing jigs around the dining room table and giving me grape Kool-Aid ice cubes wrappe in paper towel to suck on. I miss watching my Grandma M knit and embroider and her teaching me the stitches. I miss the family weiner roasts at my Grandpa's farm and the wheel barrow rides and banding the pigeons. My Grandpa H raised and raced homing pigeons and won tropheys. I miss the money tree and bananas growing on the pear tree. I miss my Grandpa H. I even miss the outhouse. LOL I miss playing with dolls. More than anything on this Earth I wanted to be a Mommy. I miss the backyard ice rinks and being able to skate all day on weekends and all winter. We had lots of snow back then. I am afraid to skate now because I am afraid of falling and breaking something. LOL I miss making tents out of blankets thrown across the clothesline and held down with rocks. My friends Mary Sue and Mary Jo and I would sleep outside in those tents on hot summer nights. I miss going for drives with my Mom and Dad and stopping for ice cream. I miss downtown Windsor when we had a nice downtown filled with stores instead of kiddie bars and strip joints. Stopping at Kresgies for a piece of cherry pie or pastries. Sitting on Santa's lap at Smith's and the smell of lavender from the lavender cart. I miss going to Hudson's Department store in Detroit. I miss my Grandma's pink aluminum Christmas tree. LOL I miss the hustle and bustle of Christmas in this house and my Mom baking up a storm and the smell of the turkey cooking when I woke up in the morning. I miss making leaf houses in the fall with all my friends. We would rake leaves into rooms and we called my friend Kathy Mabel. LOLOL I miss all of us neighbourhood kids getting together and playing hide-n-seek, or Red Rover or Mother May I or Stop and Go and playing baseball on the empty lot or playing tops with baseball cards. I miss the smell of the gum that was inside the baseball card packet. I miss seeing my Grandma M and my Aunt Cissie walking up my street from the bus stop in their matching red shoes and carrying a big string tied box of donuts, Napoleans and Cream puffs from Kresgies downtown for us to eat. Wow, this thread and the Christmas music I am listening to and decorating the treehas made me feel a little melancholy. Plus my sister Lizzie just called to chat and I haven't talked to her in a few weeks. Anne...See MoreWeek 74: What's for dinner....or planning your kitchen to your style
Comments (45)My kitchen remodel was absolutely designed around how I cook & how we use the kitchen. Three things I wanted were: 1. Lots of natural light - I cook from-scratch meals almost every day and spend a lot of time here. In addition to prep/cooking, this is where most casual entertaining happens, where I fold laundry, work on the computer, and where DH & I eat most meals. I used to have one small window and we looked at walls of upper cabinet boxes (depressing). We eliminated many uppers, added storage in the island, put the range in the corner so that this is now what I see when I'm working there. 2. Induction range - I also chose my stove for how I cook. I prefer the look of a pro-style gas stove but chose induction because the perfect stovetop temp control works best for my style of cooking. I don't do wok or high sear frying, but for 9 months of the year you'll likely see a pot on my stovetop. I do lots of stocks, soups, stews & chowders. Induction was made for simmering! Here's the pot of chicken stock I have going on this rainy day. 3. Big stone (no prep sink) island -I chose to have a big, uninterrupted island top that, in addition to being our preferred everyday eating spot, also works as a serving table for buffets (has the plugs for crockpots/warming trays). It also allows for a number of people to work around it with room to spare. Like when the grands come over for the annual Christmas cookie bake ;) There are SO many elements I just love in other kitchens posted here but some just wouldn't have worked as well for me. I've used this kitchen for almost a year now, though, and still appreciate it every day. Great thread to get people in the planning stages to really consider their priorities for use over just looks. Comments (20)Lots of granite in the remodeled ones. Basic appliances from Sears/Best Buy etc. in stainless. Maple, Oak or Cherry. Mostly veneers. Large format tile floors. Our home was built in 1976 and many haven't remodeled at all. Those that have do more replacement than actual remodeling. I doubt many even know that Ikea does kitchens. My kitchen in progress is high-end (LOL) for the neighborhood. I am probably the only one on my block who has gas much less a 36" open burner range and a Ventahood. The addition of a wall oven will put it over the top. ;-) I just ordered Kraftmaid cabs in Hickory. We are remodeling for function and how we want things to be. Not worried about resale since we plan to continue aging in place. A friend in an adjoining neighborhood just had her kitchen done. Used some buy a "kitchen in a box" place she found at a home show. Haven't seen her kitchen yet. They came to her house with samples of what they offered from cabinets to appliances and she chose from that. I find most people I talk to are like that. The research, interesting product sharing and number crunching we do here on this site are not what I find in my neighborhood or among my friends in general....See MoreWhat is Cooking in Your Kitchen This Week?
Comments (34)Amylou, I used to make a half (longwise) loaf of Vienna bread slathered with an olive, cheese, chopped egg, onion & can't remember what else spread. It really wasn't very appealing looking, but oh was it good! Now I have to see if I still have the recipe and make it again! I bought a gyros kit at Aldi and made that yesterday & shared with my DD. Not nearly as good as the local shop, but way less expensive and decent - I used cherry tomatoes (my last), red peppers, thin sliced zucchini and arugula on the side. Today I started using the ham that I found on deep discount that has been taking up space in the fridge. I sectioned it up, will keep some in the fridge for the next few day's meals, and freeze the rest - including the bone for bean soup later. I am going to make that apple pie that I have been wanting tomorrow - my incentive for getting all the blinds in the house wiped down and the fridge cleaned (I finished washing the windows yesterday). Making good progress on the fall cleaning....See Moreaprilneverends
