Kristin Congrats on your remodel Are you working w/Architect or designer? Personally I would want the fp centered on the wall w/some heft to either side. Meaning some wall space, lentils (legs) for the mantle & surround & not crowded by window which may detract from a focal point. I would also consider some symmetry on that wall - Once you have the overall design: wall, windows, FP I would sit with the person whom is building the fp - a few things come to mind: Windows will have an effect on the draft/venting of the fp 2nd - depending on the firebox (actual opening) will then dictate what the surround should be. There are strict codes to adhere to when building a fp - ie "no combustible materials within..." so that will also play into the mix before deciding on the aesthetics The surround is aesthetic, the hearth has function - but the fireplace must be built adhering to code first Link below may help you decide hope that helps Here is a link that might be useful: images of fp

You have to have the proper 0 clearance insert to attempt something like that. The whole setup is 20-30K by the time it’s all done with stone slab, labor, etc. Notice the rounded corners? That’s the weak point. It still might crack from heat stress. Most stone guys would only do that with a guarantee as joined pieces, with seams.

I’m planning a remodel and will be turning My small San Francisco Victorian parlor into a bedroom, and opening up the previous bedroom to be part of the living room. Sadly this means taking out an old marble fireplace that technically works. just not very well. A friend would like to buy the marble fireplace surround from me and I am happy to charge her just cost of removal and transport etc. This is a mass produce piece from about 1890-1900 that I see in buildings of the same age here in San Francisco. I’ve attached a picture from the unit upstairs since my house is a mess and their fireplace surround is identical. Thoughts about what to charge my friend? Again, I don’t want to make money, just not lose any!

@Patricia Colwell @Beverly Pellet stove is on tracks and can easily be rolled out. We then can replace the tiles and hide the old fireplace. Hmm, mayb its just me and i need to get used to the existng black tile. We then can continue same tile around the stove. Or add MDF just below the black tile tile, paint it White same as surround. @Sammie J Hi Sammie, thank you for replying. the black metal is the old fireplace and coukd not be removed without destroying the entire wall.
