Window Sills - what do you have?
Comments (20)For those of you who have a non-wood stool, what material is used to trim out the rest of the window? You still use wood, correct? I have never seen a residential home with anything other than wood window trim (regardless of what part of the window trim we are discussing). So, to address the OP question...I will be using painted (white)oak trim for my window stools, and I will be using brick for my window sills. FWIW, I disagree with the above posters who have stated that it doesn't matter what the correct terminology is about a material or an installation. I think it matters very much, and it serves as one example of why homeowners so rarely get what they expect during the building process. By using the correctly defined terms (and by defined, I mean by the industry guidelines, such as the IRC, and not by Webster's dictionary), the homeowner gains a measure of control over the process. There are no disagreements over what was meant during a conversation about materials, and it forces both sides to have a true understanding of the details of the transaction. I'm on mightyanvil's side for this discussion......See Morestone window sill question
Comments (11)Thank you for your input, I went by to ask questions again and I was suggested to just do the install right on top (3CM) and then edge treatment on the bottom lip same as the edge the countertop, a thick overlay. I guess it sounds OK to me. It will have a thicker look to it but I am not happy with the blinds being overly long by 3/4" as it was already made for the existing sill I guess I shouldn't notice it too much.. They do have 1 CM material but I am not sure if the fabricator can order just the small amount to do the job right. You can see the dark line on my window frame was the previous quarter round to hide the caulking, the new sill made of the slab material is only slightly higher....See MoreDrywall Seams Around Window Openings
Comments (8)If we use three inch wide casing four inches of drywall will still be exposed. This is a presentation window and cracks at the corners of the window are unacceptable to me. We had a lot of serious issues in our home due to ghetto construction by the original builder 30 years ago and subsequent contractors. I spent the better part of the last year reframing and planning the walls to make them plumb and flat and used 18 gauge metal studs to level and flatten the ceiling. I made it clear I wanted full sheets used along with a Level 5 smooth finish. We paid 4,000.00 for this work. Looks like my wife and I will have to rent a truck to pick up two sheets of 5/8â 54â wide drywall and redo the wall. I will ask that their tape & finish person completes the work. He has to come back anyway since he forgot to sand many areas....See MoreWeird stain at top corner of window (also posted on windows)
Comments (10)if you go to all the trouble to take the siding off to really fix this long term. invest in a quality flashing tape, not a cheap brand. I'd hire someone with vinyl siding install experience & have them remove the siding to expose the sheathing of the wall. then hire someone who understands flashing methods. you can learn & show them how to do it properly, and perhaps even the vinyl removal person can do the flashing. best of luck....See Morejust_janni
