Small Corn Ears
Comments (3)Small short ears are usually lack of water or nitrogen. To get a big ear you need a big stalk, nearly one inch diameter at the base, and large green leaves. This takes lots of sun, fertile soil, and plenty of water. I'd bet the plants were small or water stressed. Wayne is right in that poor pollination usually results in scattered kernels on the cob. Water, fertility or some other stress gives a short ear....See MoreSomething eating my sweet corn ears - help
Comments (11)Last week my late corn took a beating very similar in your pics and I figured that it's either early morning squirrels or late nite raccoons. I surrounded my plot with nylon netting but the varments were still getting into the corn chewing thru the nets and eating the pre-ripened ears like peeling bananas. I was wrong on both varment counts. I placed a large hav-a-hart trap in the middle of the corn plot (with ear inside) and the next morning I had a skunk in the trap with an ear eaten to the bone. I knew that skunks were stealing my grapes but apparently they love Ambrosia sweet corn too....See MoreFear of cooking corned beef...
Comments (46)Because of this thread, I bought and cooked corned beef brisket last week. It was wonderful!! Very tender and very flavorful. I wondered why I don't cook them more often. Because of this thread I learned to buy a "flat." Until this thread, I did not know there was a difference, or even a choice. I opted for the long simmer in the oven, rather than the bake. I wanted something that would take little of my attention because I was in the middle of making the "car bomb" cupcakes. Rather than cooking the veggies with the brisket, I cooked them separately, mainly because I wanted to make skillet-roasted potatoes (not a fan of boiled potatoes). We got 2 meals out of it, then I got a corned beef sandwich and to finish up the "crumbs," I made a dab of corned beef salad to munch on with crackers. I ♥ CF...See MoreCooking corn over coals
Comments (20)OK, I soaked it a little, wrapped it in aluminum foil that had some holes in it to allow the smoke to get in, and the campsite had a grill, which I had to keep lowering and raising depending on how the fire was going. The corn was yummy!! But I would definately not want to mess with skewers, I just want to put it on the fire and forget about it, not keep holding it over the fire like a marshmallow!! If I ever don't have a grill I would definatley put it right on the coals. I think Metexa is right, there's coals and then there's coals, and the right kind of coals would be good I think. I used to teach open fire cooking so I kind of know about coals. It's hard to get good coals though, if you don't have good wood. Next time I'm going to be in charge of firewood, lol! I miss all my open fire tools, but they weren't mine, they belonged to the places I worked. No room to keep such rarely used items at my house now. As for the new BF, we just like to keep things a little private, that's all. My usual rule is if I talk too much about my BF's they have a way of disappearing!! But the basics are he's a very nice guy, lives about 40 min. away from me, and so far we are hitting it off well. We may go to MI end of the month so we'll see if we're still together after that. He's from New Jersey originally....See More- 10 years agoseagrass_gw Cape Cod thanked sleevendog (5a NY 6aNYC NL CA)
