How tall does Prince Charles get in zone 6b?
Comments (6)Yes, Prince Charles will reach 12 feet ++ at maturity. This is a wonderful clematis, provided it is planted well for years of pleasure. I mix in lots of manure, compost and bone meal at planting time and I dig a very large and deep hole for the huge root system which will develop within a few years. Perle d' Azure is a weaker clematis, in my opinion. There are some that do very well after a long time to establish and others which do very poorly, but Prince Charles does well much more quickly and the flowers are also quite beautiful. It is a vigorous and lovely clematis. I prefer Prince Charles. Suzy...See MoreAnna's Promise (Downton Abbey Rose)

Comments (16)Mine were planted on 40" centers. Unfortunately for me, in light of where they were planted, since they showed their billowing, arching habit their first year and continued the pattern there after, they were removed in their third year. They never had the time to reach their full size potential for me. For your climate, I would imagine planting them on 4' centers would give a continuous hedge look where they interlock at their perimeters. I would go with 5' centers if you want them just touching/encroaching a wee bit into their neighboring Carefree Beautys. Now, in my zone 5/6 garden, my 40" center planting would probably have meant the bushes would just grow into each other a bit by each season's end. I would not go as close as or closer than 3' centers. A Floridian who grows Carefree Beauty could give more perspective on your question....See MoreAnna's Promise
Comments (2)Hi Skippy Good to hear from another Nebraska gardener! I grow a lot of roses of all kinds and they do pretty well in our zones, though some aren't as hardy as I'd wish. Feel free to ask on here for advice about roses! I've had Anna's Promise for a couple of years and I quite like it - the blooms stay that dark apricot color pretty well even in the heat of summer, and it reblooms pretty well. I did lose mine after about 3 years for some reason over the winter, so I'm replacing it. Here are some thoughts about planting it, if you're not familiar with rose characteristics: - If the rose is from a local gardening store (like the wonderful Mulhall's up in Omaha), it's most likely grafted onto Dr. Huey. That means a different rose is at the base of the plant and the one you want is grafted on top of that. In our zone, you should plant the knobby graft at least 2-3" below the soil line, so that if your rose dies to the ground over winter, the rose that regrows from the soil is actually the one you want. If a dark red rose grows in its place, the original rose has died and Dr. Huey is growing instead. - Most of our soil is pretty good, but roses tend to like to be planted with a little manure and/or compost mixed into the soil. If it's a potted rose, you're fine to add some fertilizer like Osmocote or Rose Tone or straight alfalfa hay, mixed in with the regular soil as you plant it. - Be sure it gets regular water in the first year during the dry spells of summer and keep the top soil mulched with something organic (leaves, bark mulch, etc.). Don't drown it, but if you can't feel any dampness two knuckles down when you put your finger in the soil, it needs watering. - Be patient. Most roses take 3 years to get really settled, so you may not get all that much bloom for the first couple of years. Have fun! Cynthia...See MoreKarenPA_6b
