Looking for an Active Flower Forum?
Comments (9)Hi & welcome to GardenWeb! Hope you've had a chance to investigate the list of GardenWeb forums more closely. They are the most active gardening forums of which I'm aware. Name-that-plant is almost always the forum to go to for ID'ing, with a few exceptions, most notably roses. Unfortunately, it's just the time of year when gardening discussions in general are heading into their usual, seasonal slow-down. But by all means, feel free to start/add to any discussions you like! Unfortunately, the cute little flower from your picture is generally considered a weed because it has too many strikes against it. It is not native, unruly looking overall appearance, seeds prolifically, and the flowers are hard to catch since they open/close so quickly. Hence the common name "flower of an hour." I wouldn't pull one up if it appeared at my house, but wouldn't let it drop a bunch of seeds after I'd managed to catch one of the flowers open. I wonder if these plants react to light levels, like morning glories and Mirabilis jalapa (4'o'clocks?) Maybe they're open all day (or earlier/later) if it's overcast?...See MoreI wish this forum were more active!!
Comments (2)I'm sure I'll be full of questions when I actually start the work on my new rock garden. I'm still thinking and planning and reading everything I can get my hands on. I still haven't found my book by Linc Foster:-(...See MoreForum not as active? Answer the Poll, please! Part Deux
Comments (55)flyleft, send me an email and I'll give you the whole ugly scoop - I don't want to totally derail this thread into something that I could easily see devolving into a political argument. oakleyok says: "I think we all would like a pat on the back every now and then. [...] It hurts when we do a topic asking a simple question or just to show something off, and all we get is criticism." So SAY what you want and don't want. Say something like "Hey, I finally finished such-and-such, and I wanted some pats on the back from my buddies because I worked really hard and my family just doesn't 'get it' how much this project meant to me. I'm not looking for critiques because I like it the way it is, I just want to share what I did." If you want people to critique something but you're feeling extra thin-skinned (not the best time to post, however), tell people to go easy on you. If you only want them to consider one thing, like a lamp, and not pay attention to the rug or the curtains, say so! "I do get my feelings hurt when I do a topic and the replies have nothing to do with what I ask." I'm sure you'll probably take this as "criticism", but you do need to become better acquainted with the concept of "topic drift". Side discussions do occur, especially in long threads, when person A finds something in a post by person B that s/he wants to address even though it isn't what the OP has asked, but it doesn't quite merit starting an entire new thread. And sometimes the whole thread does drift off into an unexpected direction and take on a life of its own... when that happens you either put on the big girl panties and go with it (because frequently when this happens it can be a LOT of fun) or you shrug and abandon the thread as a lost cause, but it's gotta sink in better that it is NOT about YOU personally when every single post in a thread you start isn't about you and your question from beginning to end. It's just the way forums work....See MoreAre these forums biased towards bad opinions?
Comments (19)I think a lot of the negativity comes from people who are remodeling after living with older appliances for several years. For example saying Bosch/KitchenAid/GE or whatever is wonderful because one has had one for 15 or 20 years is irrelevant to the same appliances built in recent years. With new energy standards, environmental protects etc. appliances today will never be the performers they once were. Add the digital age with all the electronics and all the bells and whistles to the lot and you have an even greater failure rate. The smart consumer IMO will look for the most basic appliances to do the job. Those appliances will outlast those with multi functions. That said we all want certain items for their bling. I find myself compromising and simply lowering my expectations as to longevity and repair issues. I will never give up my old pre Fisher&Paykel DCS all gas range. I bought it sight unseen (none in stock here) when I learned of the changeover and saw the bells and whistles being added to the new line. Doesn't even have a clock. Little to wear out and since it's all basic components it will be reparable 40 years from now, long after I am gone. On the other hand I am risking a new Samsung FD fridge just because I happen to like the layout. If I get 10 years out of it I will be happy. Lowered expectations....See Moreannz3
