Friday tea...again :)
Comments (1)Summer finally got here, the last couple of weeks have been great, today it's supposed to be in the 80's. Yesterday I worked out on the shady side of the garden, cut down the persicaria so I can get in at those blanky, blank, couch grass roots and I also moved everything out of the way for the tree service coming to cut down our 40 year old flowering cherry, it has a lot of dieback and is starting to look ugly. This tree has cast shade on the part of the garden I'm working on right now for over twenty years. Once the tree is gone it'll get more afternoon sun so some of the plants will have to be removed and planted elsewhere, I'm going to leave the azaleas and shrubs but everything else is coming out. I'll watch how much sun this spot gets once the tree's gone for the rest of the summer, I'll know then what I can plant, I'm hoping to move some of my echinaceas, shasta daisies and other sun lovers there. So tea this afternoon will probably be in a mug sitting on a rock wall in amongst all the disarray LOL. Annette...See MoreOnce again, my garden hopes and dreams are crushed. Literally.
Comments (64)Scott, I just just logged on and saw your post. We have been so crazy busy with clean-up, the kids, and just daily life that I haven't checked back in. This story has a HAPPY ending! Or, at least, not a bad one. :) Our insurance deductible is $2,000. The claim was just over $4,000 in damages per the adjuster. He gave us a couple of hundred for debris removal, $2,000 for the fence repair, a little bit for the attic leak which just requires some water seal, and around $2000 for the depreciated value of the play set and grill. Nothing for the large tree or fruit trees, as they did not hit any structures. So we have $2,000 for repairs. The city of Jenks hauled away all of our small limbs free of charge. I listed the play set for parts on CL (swings, slide, rock climbing wall, ladder. etc) for $80. A very nice man came and bought the parts, then insisted he haul away the scrap wood too. He has 20 acres somewhere and said he would rather burn it, so we didn't have to pay to get it hauled off! He is a carpenter, and said that now he can build his grandchildren a play set for minimal cost. Win-win for both of us. I helped him load it, and I thought I was gonna die. Some of the items were huge and heavy (the roof, the tunnel)...He brought a pickup truck and a 16 foot trailer, and they were both piled high when he drove off. My neighbors' landscapers asked if they could have the grill for scrap metal, so I gave it to them. Dave fixed most of the damaged fence with a few new rails, some leftover stain, and some quickcrete. That cost under $50. So now, we actually have around $2,000 to replace the play set and grill (which is about what they will cost). We pretty much broke even :) The big tree is mostly gone, and many of my small fruit trees were undamaged. One was on its side, and we replanted and staked it. A couple are snapped off. They may regrow. I do still have a large stump and a few feet of the base of my tree laying in the garden, Dave has been hacking away at it. But Scott, if you are ever in the area and the offer still stands, I'd love to take you up on it. Don't make a special trip, and I'd insist on paying you something for your time and effort. I'm not sure how long you are going away for, but I don't think Dave is going to get this thing chopped up any time soon. :) Jo...See Morestarting over...
Comments (28)Thanks for the sympathy and good wishes, folks. We closed today on the new old house and had a really experience with that; we have a showing Saturday afternoon and we're going to start seriously packing this weekend with an eye toward moving in about three weeks. Renting the house out isn't a viable option for us. Both DH's and my parents did the landlording thing so we are both very familiar with the PITA factor, but most importantly, the rent we would expect to be able to get (thanks to a glut of rental townhouses and condos driving down rents for SFHs) would not cover our base costs of carrying the property. Constantly worrying about whether something was going to need repairing and put us further in the hole or whether So-and-so was going to get the rent paid on time this month would be a very significant problem. We were told that the buyers said they were backing out because of the hotel project; we told our agent to get a letter saying that but we have not seen one, not that we are the least bit surprised! Of course the earnest money went poof - I'm not even sure what the point IS of earnest money these days because it's pretty much impossible for the sellers to get it. As for going after the town for money, I have never heard of anyone getting money from a town because of something a private party was doing; the town is not there to protect people from the free market, no matter how much we might wish it! Bernie, I'd really love to know how we were supposed to have disclosed something WE didn't even know about? As soon as we had ANY information about what was going on we notified the buyers because that was the ethical thing to do as well as to legally cover our arses - however, our now-former agent did not take any sensible negotiating tack such as saying "look, we've learned that thus-and-so has come up, but before you panic, we'd like you to give us some time [say 10 days] to get more details". Tricia, I'll look into auctions although it does make me nervous because I know of two houses within 1/4 mile of me that were up for auction this summer and both still have their for-sale signs out front; I know the reserve for one was well below market (frighteningly so from my POV!). I have read that local auctions are primarily still attracting the infomercial-drunk "buy a house for pennies on the dollar" investor wannabes who aren't interested in paying FMV, but I'll ask around. I do want to give our new agent a chance, rather than letting my frustration with a yutz derail that relationship before it's even gotten out of the station, and we've got a few months before we're getting into trouble range....See MoreOnce again, you can order 4 free Covid at-home tests
Comments (9)Already did it and received the tests in just a couple of days. I must've hit on a sweet spot 🙂 We also haven't had any occasion to use our at home tests - yet. Both hubby and I are being very safety conscious, even if others around here are not - actually, especially because others around here are not....See More- 10 years ago
