Clothilde Soupert cl or Souvenir de la Malmaison cl?
Comments (11)I don't recommend CLIMBING CLOTILDE SOUPERT for Southern California. This cultivar is prone to powdery mildew in dry climates. Clotilde is a very climate specific rose, needing both humidity and heat to ward off the mildew and to fully open the tightly quartered flowers. She performs best in the Old South where the summers are sultry. A good option for you is CLIMBING LA FRANCE. The nodding pink flowers are larger and gracefully nod downwards, always a plus for a climber. The blooms are also intensely fragrant. The only disease problems this rose has is black spot, something that really isn't much of a concern in your dry Mediterranean-like climate. I think you would also be pleased with Climbing Maman Cochet or Madame Berard (tea-noisette, 1870). I've read that both A SHROPSHIRE LAD and CLIMBING SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON are poor repeaters. Flo, I'm glad your Climbing Clotilde is doing so well. When this rose is "on" she is truly breathtaking. Best wishes, Patrick Image of Madame Berard by cweathersby-NE-TX-7b/8a. Comments (8)Unfortunately, I am kind of a fragrance snob, but with good reason. There are just TOO MANY beautiful roses out there, so I needed SOME criterium to limit my choices. Whenever I've bought any, I usually narrow the search to 5/5 or 4/5 in the fragrance department first and then select what I like from what's left. The only exceptions were when something had a relatively unique characteristic that I found appealing. I'm not even sure if I will get either of the two. I had a spot in mind, and was thinking of either a soft-yellow or dark-red climbing rose with fragrant flowers that hung down. The spot is against the south-facing wall of the garage that's a taupe-gray color. If I went with a soft-yellow rose, I would plant the clematis 'Niobe' to climb into the rose. If I went with the dark red rose (I'm leaning toward 'Orfeo') I'd plant a purplish-blue clematis with it. :-) ~Christopher...See MoreCL's dining tables - opinions as to quality?
Comments (17)The Thomasville and Stanley sets look uncomfortable to me, but that is just my opinion, what do I know? With most of the CL stuff it is pretty hard to tell if you'll like it until you see it. I love the hickory white set but it is pricey and seems a little too modern for the space as it is now. The one in Gibsonia is very classic, as is the Drexel, but only six chairs would be a down side for me. I like the ten Hendredon dining chairs, very similar to the ones my folks have which have held up well, but with no table to go with them they might be difficult to match. If I liked that table that is not pictured, I'd go with that set because it is the most neutral and you can dress it up or down so you might not tire of it as quickly. If there were more chairs, I'd go with the one in Gibsonia, mostly because I like that style of table, very comfortable for seating large groups. If you like the Thomasville and Stanley chairs and don't find them uncomfortable, then they would be good too. It has been my experience that the pieced wood chairs can break over time but they can be fixed I guess. Just depends on how rowdy you get with them!...See MoreWhat is your opinion/experience with alfalfa and AA tea? & Qs
Comments (195)No, baking soda would not harm at all provided the final pH of the solution is reasonable. And you are not using so much of it as to cause salt burn. Just measure the pH of the aa tea and add baking soda to till you just get your pH. sodium bicarbonate appears in water from many sources. Its a matter of pH and concentration. Do on a small volume first, keeping track of how much you are adding of what and then you can scale up as needed. Be aware that sometimes solutions that contain a lot of amino acids and proteins (such as aa tea) may suck up a lot of salts without changing pH, ie they can be strong buffers. In this case you cannot use baking soda but need something more caustic such as sodium hydroxide (lye)...just a little bit of lye can make the pH alkaline quickly. the experiment is worth doing, adjusting pH of aa tea to an alkaline range. It may happen that you have to add alkaline water in a different way. But it may work the way you want it to....See Morejacqueline9CA
