Bunching Onion Heat Tolerance

Thanks everyone for helping me.

I was looking at Japanese & Welsh bunching onions and several say "heat tolerant." Any clue on what temps they're talking about? Is that desert heat they're talking about? Up to 100f?

Im looking for some perennial onions to plant in one of my beds to enjoy (and practice on), so any ideas on that front are appreciated. I was looking at some of the Japanese ones like "feast" or "Ishikura" that look like something I'd cook with.

No idea what they mean when they say "heat tolerant" but there is one way to know. Plant them and see how they do.

I purchased white multiplier onions from a guy in Florida off eBay. Great service and product. Planted mine last fallin a shady area and they did well, I started harvesting in January here in SC.

Are they any good to eat? Don't look all that tasty from the pic. Heat seems to be getting to them. If you don't want them, dispose of them. You could try to cut them all off and see if anything comes up edible for fall. I assume that the Onions will not grow all that great during the heat of Summer. Green Onions grow better (far as good to eat) in cooler weather. While they do survive winter (even in zone 5), I'm not sure if people keep them going. Mine are usually a big messy smelly clump full of half dead shoots, so I get rid of them and start some new clumps.

Salt Tolerant, heat tolerant and fragrant?

I've seen a research article that determined 'Perle d'Or' had good salt tolerance on par with Rosa rugosa (I'm not sure about salt air; I think they were working with soil only) and recommended it for trial planting in saline-soil parts of Egypt. It certainly has heat tolerance, and is also quite fragrant and has good disease resistance.

While this thread was pointlessly bumped, I wanted to thank Dean for sharing that study. I have 2 A. pindrow and they've been just fine here. Also showing enough root rot resistance _for northeastern Maryland_ (elsewhere, YMMV) A. recurvata A. alba (there's a huge one at Longwood Gardens, and a big one at National Arboretum) A. nordmanniana Failures: any western US fir on its own roots - I've tried several of them; although my house came with a Concolor fir that was 40-50' tall, it was in slow decline the whole time and died after one of the mega-wet spells we had in the early 2010s. If you had to chose one as slightly tolerant for the eastern US, it would be that one. And they are common landscaping material up north like the NYC and Boston suburbs. Abies delavayi on its own roots Btw to 'Cliff' ungrafted Noble Fir, Abies procera, is 100% no go for anywhere in the southern US other than the highest mountain towns like Boone, NC. Will probably die the first year of root rot, as did mine.

My first concern now is if I need to put a dome over seed trays or pots during germination. It is what is always recommended, and I can do. However, it's 90 degrees during days and 70 degrees at night and wondering if covering will steam bath them to death in this weather til they show a sprouting. (inside my house is about as hot since I have only one floor fan and one window AC) Rooting in water: I know coleus, begonias, etc can be rooted in water, and have done so. Didn't think pansies was on that list. I've read, altho you can get it growing roots in water, the plant system will not be as strong. Hope yours does very well. The baskets lining with landscape paper giving a cascading effect sounds great. I have a roll of landscape "fabric", I think it's called. Blackish which supposedly keeps out weeds. Wondering if that could work instead of the Weed-X-paper. I passed up a stack of burlap sacks at an estate sale a week or so ago. Stupid me. Yeah, the idea of planting pansies in pots is great, giving mobility when storms come especially. Tho' if a sizeable hurricane comes again this year, I might have to take refuge holding on to the chimney on the roof, with a bunch of pansy pots strung around my body.

Chances are that in a mild climate, bunching onions will be a winter crop, and go dormant during the summer.

When I lived in SanDiego, I grew several onions during the winter... my favorite for scallions was a multiplying onion that I obtained from Hmong gardeners in the City Heights Community Garden. It had small leaves somewhere between onions & chives, and divided into 10 or more the first year. Here, the same onion produces clusters of small bulbs.

Some of the bunching onion varieties have stems over 1" wide, and look like leeks. I have two bunching onions going to seed this year (they flower at different times), if you contact me in late Summer, I could send you seed for both.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll just try out a few different ones and see how they do. I'll try to remember to report back someday!

Evergreen probably does ok, it was recently on the produce list of a local CSA so it grew ok for at least a season.

I have a growing environment where the temperature goes over 100 F most days for three months. The plants are in a large greenhouse which I do not cool in the summer other than opening vents. Nabechan, evergreen white bunching, parade, and guardsman all do well for me, producing sweet greens, and dividing throughout the year. I start with just a few plants from seed, and let the onions form good-sized bunches from each seed. I find that the bunched onions, selectively harvested, taste sweeter, and are less fibrous than starting lots of plants from seed at the same time. My belief is that the bunches grow so quickly once they get going that the plants end up being more vigorous, and that the rapid growth improves the flavor. Just a few square feet of each variety keeps us well supplied throughout the year. None of these varieties go dormant in the heat. I do grow others which go dormant in heat, including Egyptian walking onions, and a number of shallots. Usually the dormancy lasts for less than a month.
