Giant Elephant Ear problems

I have a common giant Xanthasoma sagittifolium in the corner of my courtyard. It was beautiful when I moved in last year, but it just isn't growing well this year. I put a bunch of other plants around it so when I water and feed them, it gets watered and fed too. It should be much larger by now, since it hardly even froze back last year, just lost its leaves. I need it to grow and give shade to that corner. Does it possibly need more water? I know they like to be in damp soil. The leaves come out, then turn brown around the edges and start to die immediately. I thought it would be getting enough water, since I water that corner almost every day, but maybe not.
