Please critique my plan

Yesterday my wife brought home a tropical Hibiscus that to me looks healthy. But it's being grown in the typical peat based crap. As a matter of fact just before writing this post I put my finger on the surface of the soil and it was very damp.

So my plan is to put it in 5-1-1 and I like the pot it is already in so I'm thinking a re-pot will be in order since I'm sure the plant has never had a genuine re-pot and is prolly very root bound.

This will be my first bonafide re-pot and I am a little nervous about the whole root pruning thing since I can't even seem to get gritty mix to work for me. So is there any reason why I shouldn't do a root prune on this baby when I remove all of the peat soil and replace it with 5-1-1? Should I expect foliage drop after the re-pot?

Here is a pic of the plant as of right now.
