Comments (4)Also check out the spectacular performance of the Gavita reflectorized lamp, there really is nothing like it, and the lamp is cheap to boot!!! It comes in 400W and 600W, and is available cheap from HTG supply. Click on the link to show the certified photometric data of the reflector pattern -- there is just nothing to compare to -- a no brainer in my opinion, which is why I only use the Gavita lamp for my growing. Because the lamp has no external reflector, it stays much cooler than a lamp that is housed in an external reflector, and is easily cooled by convection. Disclaimer: I am a pathologist, with no links to any lamp manufacturers. Here is a link that might be useful: Certified photometric data on the Gavita lamp, again, it kicks the butt out of all other lamps, and I don't know why anyone would buy any other lamp....See MoreVery Strange! Comments (10)Palimpset, thanks for your input. I live in Merion, just outside the city limits. The realtor just called and is definitely coming over tomorrow, so I will get her perspective on the cost/benefit analysis of the remodel. I'm sorry you didn't get more of a return on your redo. Our kitchen is pretty yucky--chipped doors that fall off the cupboards (which are an ugly plastic gray-beige), peeling wallpaper, a panel fallen off the dishwasher, a non-working freezer in one of the fridges, and a layout that doesn't let people congregate. So we'll see what she says. lisa_a, I agree with your assessment of the DO in Layout 1, and the full baths in Layouts 2 & 3. Definitely want to combine the shower and toilet areas, and put the ovens next to a landing stage. Thanks for the info on stud walls. And your point about the traffic flow from the pool in Layout 2 is good too--if I could train the kids to use that entrance instead of the one they're used to. I like having the banquet area there, but hate giving up the long run on the bottom. This is challenging! Thank you for your thoughts....See MoreWhen Your Opinion Differs about a Book
Comments (46)Sheri, I listened to the song and I like the singer's voice and the music, but I'm not sure that I would've ever picked up on the association of that song with Silverstein's book, except for the title. Was it something that immediately came to you? I'm wondering now if the book was actually aimed at children or adolescent readers in the first place. I know it was marketed as such and can be found in children's sections of bookstores and libraries, and the illustrations are cartoon-type drawings that might draw young readers to it; but somehow it doesn't seem like a story that would arrest many young readers I've known, except perhaps the most sensitive and perceptive ones. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems more to me to be a book for adult readers that just happens to look like a kids' book. After reading the synopsis and reviews of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, I think I'll give it a pass. Iris, I think leaving out Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a shame, but luckily his popularity isn't dependent on some snooty writers' list. I suspect that most of the lists by writers who claim such-and-such classics influenced them are disingenuous. If they weren't afraid of appearing less than well read, they might admit their main influences were more along the lines of pulp fiction. Ever notice how similar these danged lists always are? I think they just copy each other....See Morenyboy
