Bird/wildlife watching in Washington DC metro area

Hi folks

I just moved to DC and was wondering if you have any insights into some good wildlife watching spots in the area. Those accessible by public transportation would be great. Any info on birding groups/guided tours would also be much appreciated. I did try Google and got some info from the Audubon Soc on birds along the rivers (Potomac and Anacostia) and local parks.

Boy, Kirk & Robert...looks like you both hit the JACKPOT..Miscellaneous assortment of mail and parcels piled in the aisle of a baggage car and requiring removal before the mail in the stalls can be "worked"...that's RR lingo! LOL! Looks like you've both kept that train a-rollin'! kirk...your blue bottle tree looks BEAUTIFUL in the snow even w/that "orange thing-y" hanging in it! LOL! Good to see JT pics, too! Looks like Campbell had a bear-able time! robert...nice salvagable stash, too! (>even though the pkg suffered a head-on collision! What kind of wildlife is enjoying your garden?

We live in a suburb of Toronto on a 1/4 acre. This is our first year observing the birds so I can't identify all of them yet, but so far the ones we can identify are cardinals, mourning doves, robins, chickadees, sparrows, woodpeckers, finches, grackles, starlings, plus one tiny owl last Halloween. More exciting for me has been the family of raccoons who nest in our silver maple. The tree is right beside the patio where I sit on warm nights. Last summer, Mama raccoon was so used to me sitting there that she didn't mind my observing her leading her four babies down the tree, one at a time, about five feet away from me! One of her daughters stayed with her this year and they spent some time wintering in my garage (I made a bed for them). Here's a pic of last year's baby... There seems to be a wildlife freeway through our yard. In addition to the raccoons, we get visits from opossum and skunk who walk by the patio on a regular basis. Can't wait to see them again this year!

Had to pop this one back up to the top. It's true. The Obama's will support this again in 2009. Thank goodness. Check out the list of authors attending. I finally made it to DC earlier this year and visited one of the three buildings that comprise the Library of Congress. Quite impressive and I'm looking forward to returning so I can check out the other two buildings. Thinking this would be a good opportunity to do so. Me too, mimipadv. Nature is not for the squeamish. Has anyone else heard of Wild Heart Ranch in Claremore, Ok? They do a lot of great work. They rehab and return eagles (and many other animals) to the wild. Their FB feed is always interesting. http://www.wildheartranch.org/default.asp
