What major home improvement would you like to make
Comments (42)Lot of things! I would take the sunroom off and add about 6 or 7 feet to the entire back of the house, making my bedroom, both bathrooms and the kitchen bigger. I would make a little cozy sitting room/den/sunroom area off the kitchen. Completely redo the kitchen and add a little bigger dining area. I bought tile flooring for the bathrooms that never got put in so that would have to be done, actually the baths need to be redone, they aren't horrible but I can't stand fiberglass tubs. If I had the money I would put in real porcelin. I'd put in Pergo all through the house and get rid of the carpet. I only have it in the kitchen right now. I don't really care about granite counters to I'd just put in some nice looking Corian or laminate in both baths and kitchen. Then I'd put in a brick patio area out back with raised bed gardens for my vegetables. I'd then have a landscaper come in and fix my existing beds, making a Japanese style garden out front, complete with koi pond (that I would hire someone else to take care of-LOL!) with the little bridge over, etc...( : I'd also have a couple dwarf fruit trees put out on the side yard: apple and cherry. Take out the pear tree out front and put in a big Sugar Maple....See MoreHey Houzz, how'z my floor plan? What do you like? What can improve?
Comments (26)Wow, some really great insights and a lot for us to think about. Here is what my house currently looks like. As you can see, we are trying to keep the existing space as intact as possible. Maybe this drawing will help with some of the thought processes? As you can see the current layout is what it is, and I'm trying to work around it. Most of the houses in our area have our design. If I make it 'optimal' then we've invested in the house more then we would be able to recoup 10-15 years down the line. If I take the current living room/kitchen area and open space that (so we can open it up into the backyard), then I feel that it will be smaller of a space and that the master would be on the noisy street (vs keeping it in the back and quieter). But I am very grateful for and appreciate all of the suggestions. And yes, this new plan is from a real architect. :/...See MoreHow can we improve exterior of our house?
Comments (20)I'm fine with all of it—cute house. Love the roofline of the main house section. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the gabled section to the right. I don't think it matches the quality of the rest, perhaps because the window seems as though it's not the right proportion and the white siding on the gable seems like the "wrong" material. The whole front of that gabled section looks like it could use more "depth", but I'm not up to explaining how. Maybe a tad more roof protruding? If it were my $50k, I would focus on this gabled section. Start by doing something different with that window. @Beth has a photo using an arched window in that section. Something like that would enhance the Spanish-American feel. If you were stuck for $$$$ to enhance this gabled section (i.e. if you can't afford a bigger window, you could fill the space better by putting shutters on that window, as in some of the examples ^^^^. I like the green/blue color, but that's not to everyone's taste. The garage door doesn't match the rest of the quality IMO, but there are good suggestions ^^^ about how to address that....See MoreSomething is off with my house- how can I improve the balance?
Comments (20)Wow!! Thank you everyone for all the input! Unfortunately I can’t reply individually for some reason, but to those who see a green grey siding colour you are spot on. After seeing some of the renderings I Definitely need to landscape more. DigDoug, i Love what you suggested here and actually Do have a purple mayflower tree right off to the right side where you rendered one in!! Its just off the frame of the pic!! For the deck skirt I have been looking for something that won’t be too ‘heavy’ or solid looking. It doesn’t look it, but the deck is about 3 feet above ground and my yard slopes away from the house, so 3 feet of a solid wood skirt would look more like 5feet- almost like a fortress? Ill definitely double down to find a skirting that works. Also, i should have added that i live relatively far northern canada, with a short growing season, and a long winter. I have yet to find anyone up here with a painted deck that doesn’t have to scrape and repaint almost yearly :( so while I love white decking i just don’t think it’s practical for me. I will definitely consider painting the bay window well the same colour as the rest of the house, as well as potentially the foundation. Maybe that will get rid of the ‘floating’ effect someone mentioned and I never realized until now. Thank You Again Houzz community!! If you have any further suggestions, keep them coming! Spring hasn’t sprung yet here so I have time to plan! 🙏🏽🤍...See MorePLF (Middle TN, Zone 7a)
