Wait period after applying weed-b-gon

Hi,

I am in the process of cleaning up a flower bed. I will be planting a few rose buses in part of it. The rest I will be converting into lawn. The lawn guys who are helping me with this just cleared out the flower bed, tilled it, and then put weed-b-gon over the whole area. How long should I wait before planting the rose bushes, and putting grass seeds?

That was an inappropriate use of the product since Weed B Gone is meant to used to control "weeds" in lawns, not flower gardens, even if there are no plants growing there. Weed B Gone is also a contact poison so spraying it on soil that has no growth is a waste of time, energy, and money.

The manufacturer says to not reapply this product for 2 weeks and to only apply it twice a year and no more. You probably could plant 2 weeks after those "lawn guys" misapplied the product.

Yeah, I had told them not to put anything. But there were multiple people and one got over-zealous -- it happens. These weed killers typically have been as effective for me as off the shelf cold medicine crap, but I bet if I seed the area they will very effectively kill off the seeds. Now I need to worry about nursing the plants that will be remain in the pots for the next few weeks.

NJgardener_2007, Do you still have the bottle? Normally, the label will contain that information. I know with a total kill products (meaning it kills all plants, not just weeds) like Roundup (except the long-lasting type) you can normally seed the next day -- even says so on the label. But for Ortho Weed Killer, I'd suggest reading the label. If you don't have the bottle, you can normally find the labels for such products online in the form of a pdf file.

Why Ironite? A 40lb bag of 1-0-1 Ironite contains 4.5% iron. That's 1.8lbs iron, 0.4lbs nitrogen at a cost of $18. A 50lb bag of 5-2-0 Milorganite contains 4% iron. That's 2lbs of iron and 2.5lbs of nitrogen (60% of which is WIN "organic" which will promote micro-organisms and a healthy lawn) at a cost of $16. At the Ironite recommended application rate of .45lbs per 1000 sq ft., it will cover 4000 sq ft. At that same .45lb rate, the Milorganite bag will cover 4400 sq ft. plus you get all of the additional nutrient advantages. Home depot sells 40# bags of Ironite in my area for $18.67 and 36# bags of Milorganite for $12.37 (which is highway robbery). Even so, you are paying 10.37/lb of iron with Ironite and only $8.59/lb of iron with Milorganite. I have never watered Milorganite in and I regularly spot spray with WBG with no issues. Something to consider.

Weed B Gon would be fine to apply after the 3 mowing of your new grass. If you bought the version of the product that attaches to the end of your garden hose (a Ready Spray) then that product should be used only with that applicator. If you try to dilute it yourself, you may end up overapplying. Just spray enough to go over the lawn one time, and do not saturate the grass. Starter Fertilizer has a 4-6 week residual. If it has been that long since your last application it would help the grass to reapply the Starter Fertilizer. It can be used in conjunction with the weed b gon. I would apply the products 1 day appart since the Weed B Gon should be on the grass for 24 hours without rain or water and the Starter Fertilizer does need to be watered in.

Crabgrass is an annual and it will die with the first hard frost anyway, so let that guide your decision. If you're not going to overseed in the heavily infested areas, I don't see the point in killing something that will die in six weeks on its own. You're right in asking if preemergent next spring is the solution to your problem. Yes, it is. That said, there are other uses for weed killer in the fall. September and October are the best times to control winter weeds (annual weeds that germinate in the fall and flower in the spring, e.g. henbit) and perennial broadleaf weeds like dandelions.

Depending on how much they applied is the big ?. If it was a small amount you should be safe to plant as long as you do not back fill with the top 2" of soil. If they used a high rate you will not be able to replant anything but grass for about 9mo-a year.

Weed B Gone has no affect on plant seeds, it needs to contact the plants leaves to be effective. They can kill off the newly germinated plants however.

If you used a licensed lawn care company someone there must be a Licensed Pesticide Applicator and that one of their employees wrongly applied a plant poison says proper supervision was not in place. I would not use those people again.

This is a bit on the pessimistic side :-) The active ingredients in Weed-B-Gon degrade quite rapidly in the soil......anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. To be on the safe side you could wait a month before planting but there is NO need to wait longer than that. As stated above, the herbicide must come into contact with plant foliage to be effective - it has minimal residual effectiveness if applied to the soil.
