Zone 10b: Dog Friendly Ground Cover
Comments (0)I am considering replacing our front lawn (in a gated, brick wall courtyard) with gravel and ground cover (likely a creeping perennial) and need some advice. The area is north facing, full shade, and the lawn is 440 sq. ft. with 2 trees (one lime, one unknown). Our 2 Golden Retrievers play out there on occasion and the puppy is quite active. :-o I love love love dymondia margaretae (silver carpet) and really want to plant it but it's apparently not good in full shade. :-( What can I plant instead that is low, tight, drought resistant, dog-friendly and a low-water user (going to take advantage of the LADWP lawn replacement rebate and can possibly get up to $1,600!). Thanks in advance for any advice!...See MoreZone 10b: Dog Friendly Ground Covering (Creeping Perennial)
Comments (11)(likely a creeping perennial) ==>>> key word in that.. or letter is ... A ... NEVER rely on one plant .. ever ... the only real way.. to find ONE plant .. is to plant a mess of different kinds... and find out.. which will thrive in your courted micro climate ... so take all the recommendations.. and wing it .. there is no definitive answer ... and you will probably end up enjoying the variation ... having owned a golden.. your biggest problem.. will probably be... getting them to not dig them up.. to find out what you put under them .. rather large golden squirrels .. lol ... so figure out.. how to protect them.. long enough to get going ... though once established.. you should be all set .... BTW ... many of the ground cover are aggressive flowerers ... which will attract bees ... which my old golden.. used to enjoy eating.. really.. what was that all about .... though usually.. the flower season is rather short.. a week or two ... but they can make it difficult to walk in your court yard.. for that period ... ken...See MoreNeed budget-friendly design help for backyard and 2 dogs
Comments (3)As a long time dog owner AND gardener, I will tell you that dogs will patrol the perimeter of a property regardless of what might be on the other side :-) You could pave the area but that seems like an unnecessary expense - wood chips will achieve the same result. Gravel will as well but less pet-friendly. Both will need some sort of restraint system/edging to keep them from migrating all over the garden. When I redesigned my back garden, I allowed a 3-4' wide track all along the fenceline for the dogs to patrol. The planting area in front of it was mounded up/bermed so that the plantings screened this track from view once the plants grew and filled in. With the existing trees, this will not be possible, but just a thought for any areas where existing trees may not be present....See MoreNeed help in choosing a dog-friendly flooring for the house
Comments (32)@ patriceny- Absolutely! :) Dogs are family! @ Fori - Lol Same here, my doodle always slide when he sits on the tile floor. So a 'sit' command ends up in a 'down' position. It happens on smooth hardwood floors too! @ nanj - Thanks for reminding me with regards to the clicking sound from their nails touching the laminate flooring! I wonder if the new laminate flooring still has that hollow sound. @ Anglophilia - Solid hardwood floors are always so beautiful. Would love to have that if budget allows! At this moment, we are looking into laminate or EVP (Engineered vinyl plank) flooring for the main areas of the home. Tile flooring for the bathrooms. In my research yesterday, we found it hard to take in that the 12mm EVPs from Coretec actually cost more than laminate and engineered hardwood flooring. I ordered some complimentary samples from Coretec through their website, hope to receive it soon for comparison....See MoreNil13 usda:10a sunset:21 LA,CA (Mount Wash.)
