Ashley: The sudden change in temperature is what I would say is cause for the leaf drop. Crotons are notorious for leaf drop due to changes in growing conditions, that is why I have never wanted to try growing one. They like high humidity. I would say your croton will send out new leaves once it acclimates to the indoor environment. In Florida this year I saw Crotons growing outside in January, when nights can drop to the low 30's, so they can take some cold. Christopher

Looks live to me. My best guess for its loosing its leaves & not yet growing new ones is transplant shock. I'd be watering it more than twice a week unless rainfall was doing the job for me, watering every other day, giving the equivalent of a large watering can each time. The grass closely surrounding it may be drinking up the water, especially if the ground is not level where it's planted. Would give temporary shade from the heat of the sun in the meantime, good for any transplant in Summer. Other remedies to try after adequate water for a week. like spraying the bare canes with Neptune's Harvest early in the evening when they're most likely to absorb it. Ben's right - easier to start fresh than take the time to help a distressed rose recuperate. I'm a softhearted gardener, so give plants "nursing" care when needed. Dianela, It looks just like the cercosora I occasionally get during the growing season. Cercospora is a fungus, doing damage to the roses very much like black spot does. The spots of cercospora have grayish or tan colored centers. Black spot is entirely black colored from the edge of the spot to its center. This is a difference without a distinction. Both fungus diseases are as nasty, as each one can be. I believe your fungus outbreak is on its way to being well controlled if a regular spraying with the Bayer fungaside is continued, which Bayer fungicide I use to keep my roses' foliage clean of disease. Your spray may have highlighted the fungus damage with additional damage if you accidentally measured the spray solution too strongly. You may also have sprayed dry, dehydrated roses. Spraying on a hot sunny day can damage the foliage too. Spraying a bush again, forgetting you sprayed it earlier, can result in foliage damage. I know.....I've done all the above myself! I have never heard of cutting back a bare root rose at planting unless there is some dead cane to be removed. Pruning of any kind always stimulates TOP growth, not the roots. You can leave all the hips on you want. The rose will not go dormant. It will continue to put out growth until the weather stops it. I've left hips on from the spring flush in June and the rose continued to grow and bloom right through until October. New Dawn is such a growth monster that I can't see any purpose in disbudding it. The roots are growing, count on it! Roses, climbers in particular, will not send up more cane than their root system can sustain. Hence the saying for climbers, first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. Those first few years that it seems to not be doing anything it is in fact building a big enough root ball to be able to push nutrients up those long canes you're waiting for. Once it feels it has sufficient roots to do that it will begin to climb.
