Does anyone have a good source for info on Adirondack style?

DH and I are currently debating the style we'd like the mountain house to be. Recently I showed him a home that was a newer version of Adirondack type architecture and design. It's a rental cabin that is done to the 9's. It was a bit OTT for us, but he became enthralled with the woodwork and such. He'd never even heard of the style and really likes the idea of doing some of the finish in our place himself. I'd like to learn more about it in order to make some design choices with the plan that will give it that feel and give him projects. The new place will have his shop and he's excited to have projects for the actual house.

I've done a few searches but keep getting the same few online references. Also I'm not sure how accurate the stuff I'm finding is. For example on site was showing pics and stated that the dark brown shingle siding and green roof were typical of the style, but were green asphalt shingles really standard in the time period?

I'm happy to buy a book or two if anyone knows of good options.

When you mention "the time period" which time period are you talking about? I think many think of a log cabin as an Adirondack style, but that is not the case. Your description of dark brown shingle siding and a green roof is more accurate.

Another option is to do an image search for "Adirondack camps" in google search for some ideas.

Adkbml, thanks. That is a great idea, I couldn't get into that site on my iPad for some reason but found the book via your link.

The time period I'm thinking of is late 1800's I guess. In my research thus far I found that the style came to be around 1850 but really got going after the civil war and into the early 1900s when the wealthy industrialists of the time were building camps to get out of the cities.

I'm not going to try for a true re-creation of the style as I'm in Georgia, but I want the feel and look.

Bring your wallet. And your purse. And your 401k. lol A few years ago I was buying teak for $8-$9 a bdft, today it's up in the $30-$40 range depending on width and thickness. FWIW, in my own house I have teak countertops in the kitchen; a roughly 4' square, 5" thick butcher block island end cap for food prep, and about 25' linear feet of 2" thick edge glued teak for some of the other countertops. All finished with mineral oil, which is easily renewable. I also have teak in our master bath for countertops and for the tub deck, finished with a film-forming spar urethane. No worries or regrets with either. Finish all six sides of the board equally to minimize seasonal or moisture-related wood movement.

Well, I learned something in the preview of Jeni's book on Amazon (and ordered the book to thank her): Like the Sicilian gelato, she uses starch to stabilize the frozen yoghurt. I have tapioca starch! I'm going to try that. The book also has the best frozen yoghurt instructions I've seen. They're for a more commercial grade of frozen yoghurt, but might be worth the trouble if I want to make a serious effort for a lot of company. Being able to make ahead and store in the freezer would be a boon. Unlike Jeni, I'm trying to reduce the richness of the dessert, rather than boost it, and her ice cream flavors sound a bit muddy for me, but the depth she goes into on techniques for storing and serving should be very useful.

Does anyone have any info on Hanssem cabinets for a kitchen?

A kitchen and bath store in Deer Park Long Island about 30 min. away sells only Hassem cabinets but his showroom looks so messy with cartons piled onto each other obscuring the door styles that it makes it unlikely that anyone can find what they are looking for. Yet people must be buying Hanssem as stores sell them or they would go out of business. At this time, I am slightly discouraged with what I hear about Hanssem. I am looking for a frameless, very moderately priced cabinet that won't give me any aggravation with a light maple finish and a door that looks like the Camden door (framed Thomasville.) I have Omega door taste and a Thomasville door pocket.

Wow, Mark, what a treasure trove of books that guy has written. I've added 2 to my Amazon cart. He even has one on building garden furniture and structures!
