Spruce/Fir limits

Hey everyone. So, the only fir and spruce that are native to my area is the Fraser Fir and the Red Spruce. Unfortunately, they're about 2,000' higher than I am, so I don't get to see them on a regular basis, although there are several people who live relatively close to me that have one or two in their yard that seem to be doing okay.

Norway spruce do great here of course, and Blue spruce seem to do anywhere from wonderful to poor little skeleton tree.. Other than those few, I don't see many species.

My main question is what exactly is it that keeps spruce and fir from doing well here? Is the humidity or the summer heat, or something else entirely? Thanks.

Kyle
