How to correct a dip in a bed where dirt washes out? Need an anchor

I added a lot of soil to a couple of low areas in a bed last
spring that holds too much water. There is a very slight slope across the whole
bed, but I have some “dips”. I lifted the Japanese painted ferns that were
there and re-planted them afterward.

Now it is low again. I don’t know if the soil settled or
washed out over the course of the winter. Maybe some of both. Other perennials (small
geraniums, a japanese forest grass “All Gold”) added late in the season at the
edge have some roots exposed on the interior, low “basin” side.

If it’s a washout, I don’t know how I can stop this from
happening again. A physical barrier would look unattractive, and I don’t really
want to hold water in, just soil. I could try hammering in some plastic shims
at the low end, but the whole area has roots and stones, so I don’t think I’d
get too far.

Any ideas what is short (under a foot) and will
grow in the shade and has deeper roots?
When you look up plants the roots are
seldom mentioned. The bed is mostly hostas and ferns, a few heuchera ( those
that that have survived).

I have fernleaf Dicentra "Luxuriant"
coming. I could divide a dwarf goatsbeard.
Move the small forest grass over, if any of those have deeper roots. I could just put another hosta in there but I don’t think they have deep
roots either. Thanks.
