I started my Back-Up 21 “ MTD used to collect leaves with a
drill due to slow starting after a year.

After watching 2-3 Youtubes on using a drill to start a mower, I
decided to try that method with some modifying then and some to come. Plus, “no
Kickback History”.

1. I used a ½ “ drill set on low of two speeds. With a 5” section of Rota Rooter cable “Pressed
connecting in ½” socket Matching flywheel’s nut, to turn engine and to protect
from kickbacks. The spring could not
take the reversed torque.

2. I used a socket with a 3/8’’Dia bolt, Sq head “Ground” to fit
and turn the ½” socket matching flywheel’s nut.

3. A future mod will be to run a bolt through the socket, locked
with a nut allowing me to turn the flywheel and remove the socket attached to
the drill. “Completed”!

While it is not possible with the horizontal pulleys, when I was a kid we would start to Simplicity tractor using the table saw. We would take the belt off thet went to the table saw blade and reroute it back to the rope pulley on the tractor. Start the saw motor, the pull back on the tractor to start it. It was simple and a 12 year old boy could do it.

The Simplicity was the two wheel type with handle bars that the reel mower attached to the front.

Follow-up:

The MTD is starting 1st
pull with the Recoil and pulling from the Motor’s level with my leg’s push off help. “The Old School Position”! I’ll plan to use it in a rotation vs letting
it sit a year. It’s the better mower vs
my 6.5 HP Murray
with the large rear wheel. The real
issue is all the reversing in our small 30 minute cut with the heavier MTD.

When I started in Industrial
Ed in 1964 we had some machines running from leather belts and motors sitting a
ways behind the machines. I wanted a 9” South Bend Lathe at home
but could not give up the space (in our 2 car garage) the leather's rear motor
and belt used. I mounted a motor and short
serpentine drive belt to the front and semi overhead (saved a foot or more
space). The newer 9” had drive belts
below in cabinets.

This has been a fun adventure
and stressful at times due to the changes in Industrial Education’s
Technology. I spent the 60’s -90 with
Traditional Woodworking, Metalworking, Plastics, Small Engines and Mechanical
Drafting. 1990-2003 I was involved with
Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and Computer Applications. My initial Woodworking, Metalworking, Plastics, Small
Engines and Auto Mechanics have remained as my hobbies.

Compression is the secret of the internal combustion engine. The fuel/air mixture in the cylinder must be compressed to be powerful when ignited. Compression occurs when the piston rises against the closed intake and exhaust valves. It's measured in psi and every engine has a normal range in it's specs that can be measured. The problem with measuring it on lawn mower engines is they all have a compression release mechanism for easier pulling of the starter cord which obviously would give a false, lower reading. I actually don't know how the mechanics get around this to find the true compression. Anyway, engines can lose compression from wear and faulty valve timing. Usually a lawn mower engine with low compression would indicate a new mower needed, but in a few cases low compression can be caused by hard carbon in the piston rings which doesn't allow them to expand and seal the cylinder. There are several brands of solvents for internal engine cleaning. The best in my opinion is 'KREEN' by Kano Labs, the makers of 'KROIL', a well-liked penetrant. I would use 'KREEN' as-directed in any engine I suspected of low compression. If it doesn't help, repair/replacement is indicated, because lawn mowers are basically cheap, and you can't justify spending hundreds on engine repair or replacement. The exception would be if you had a premium mower with a good deck and drive system that you really like. An aluminum-deck Super Recycler could be in this category - it all depends on how much you want to spend on it. I think your mower should have lasted longer. Cutting only a tad over one tenth acre every other time would constitute light use in my book, and most any mower should last almost indefinitely under those conditions WITH THE PROPER CARE. However, you can't overlook the possibility of a bad engine from the factory that may have a problem that just took some time to show up.

[Hail Mary....] [Our Father....] Well, 15 years of fallen leaves on the ground really is impossible to completely remove -- So!-leaves do remain. Now that I'm down to soil, well.... it's marvelous! Appearing (admittedly to my uneducated eye) to be very "rich" - it's dark, loose, loamy, and no weeds of any sort. A pleasure to look at, to rake, to touch, to smell, etc. I confess I haven't had a soil test done, but I am assuming that I need to add lime to the soil for the new lawn. The garden landscaping will be done in stages.... first I'll dig out most of the border edges just to separate and define the garden from the lawn area. I'll plant in stages and over time. Now that I've had more time to think about it, I've decided I just can't throw away the rest of the leaves.... I'll mow over them and spread them over the garden soil. All this new interaction with leaves has made me think that maybe we should build some kind of compost container and start keeping the leaves that fall every year. I also have a ready resource of "extras", as our lot is right next to undeveloped woods, and there are leaves laying around out there, too. I guess because of it not being a fenced area, they aren't piled way up high like the leaves in our yard were. And I've always got extra coffee grounds, banana peels, and other "gunky" stuff I can throw into the heap, too. (I had thought of offering all the bags of leaves I bagged on craigslist to anyone who wanted to come get them... wouldn't that have been crazy?? Most anything that I don't want but don't want to waste, I post on caigslist --- "you want this? you come get it"! Thanks for all your comments! The plastic is held down at the top 2 by 4. On the outside of the structure, I have the plastic sandwiched between the 2 by 4 and a 1 by 2 furring strip. The 1 by 2 is screwed to the 2 by 4 every 12 inches. Next year I am going to go every 6 inches. During the fiercest storms we had, the plastic did pull up and ripped. It wasn't bad. I just unscrewed the 1 by 2 and pulled it back tight. When I take the plastic off this winter, I am going to take it to my school or church and unfold it and tape any holes. That way it will be ready for next spring. I got the plastic, Klerk's K-50 from Stuppy's Greenhouse and Supply in Kansas City. We have to go to KC every 6 months for our daughters check up with the doctor there. I was excited to find them and they are only 1.5 miles away from the hospital we visit. With the plastic, shop around and pick it up if you can. The roll I get weighs 92 pounds. I am guessing it would cost alot to ship. Also, the price was cheaper if I picked it up and paid cash. I did get pictures taken this week of some of the features I am talking about. I will share them later. My wife downloaded them on another computer and shut it off. Thanks for the complements! Jay

I saw this on Cooks Country and it looks delicious! Skillet Peach Cobbler Serves 6 to 8 Four pounds of frozen sliced peaches can be substituted for fresh; there is no need to defrost them. Start step 2 when the peaches are almost done. 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 5 pounds peaches , peeled and cut into 1/2-inch wedges 6 tablespoons sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch Topping 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour , plus extra for work surface 6 tablespoons sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoons salt 3/4 cup buttermilk 4 tablespoons unsalted butter , melted and cooled 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1. For the filling: Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 425 degrees. Melt butter in large oven-safe nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add two-thirds of peaches, sugar, and salt and cook, covered, until peaches release their juices, about 5 minutes. Remove lid and simmer until all liquid has evaporated and peaches begin to caramelize, 15 to 20 minutes. Add remaining peaches and cook until heated through, about 5 minutes. Whisk lemon juice and cornstarch in small bowl, then stir into peach mixture. Cover skillet and set aside off heat. 2. For the topping: Meanwhile, whisk flour, 5 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in medium bowl. Stir in buttermilk and butter until dough forms. Turn dough out onto lightly floured work surface and knead briefly until smooth, about 30 seconds. 3. Combine remaining sugar and cinnamon. Break dough into rough 1-inch pieces and space them about 1/2 inch apart on top of hot peach mixture. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake until topping is golden brown and filling is thickened, 18 to 22 minutes. Let cool on wire rack for 10 minutes. Serve. (Although best eaten the day it is made to maintain the texture of the cobbles, leftovers may be refrigerated for up to 1 day. Individual portions may be removed from skillet and reheated in microwave.)

I visited a friend close by
and found rivets and 1/4X20X1/2 long bolts.
To reinstall my recoil starter since my MTD starts 1st pull
like it has compression released.
Telling him of my right arm’s stressed issue he showed me some neat
project and repairs of his.

1. Touch Start after pull
approx 5 times and pressing the brake handle to crank with the stored
energy. When the engine was killed, it
stored energy for the next start.

2. The Touch Start Eng came after
stored since approx 2003 because it w/n start. It had a bent crank, half sheared key (replaced
and it runs) with no signs of damage to the blade.

3. The Touch Start looked
ideal. I missed them on the market vs the Old Wind Handle.

4. He showed me a compression
release cam with the lobe next to the Mechanics worn round.

5. He showed me the Old 2
Cycle Toro? Used to cut slopes vs Lawn Boy that I remember.

6. His offer to me was
Electric Start due to his Stock Pile of electric start motors.

The bottom line is: Mowers
have gone through some changes since my 1960’s start.
