Weight loss secrets(??)
Comments (2)Congratulations on your weight-loss, and thank you for sharing your success in 2008. After 10 years foward to today, April 2018, do you still keep the 50 lbs. off? I'm 3 lb. over regular BMI, and I find it's a daily-battle to go under my BMI at age 56. In the summer I can easily go under normal-body-mass index (down to 118 lb), but in the winter, I usually gain 5 lbs in my cold zone 5a. I find that having a buddy to journal & be accountable to really helps me to cut down the amount of food. If anyone interested, please message me, thanks....See MoreA debate at work has come up - regarding weight loss.
Comments (46)You all bring up great points. This is a totally voluntary weight loss challenge – informal invitations are emailed out to 3 departments comprised of about 80 people. It is not officially sanctioned by the company, but not discouraged. We have had various versions of the challenge the last 4 years, and we have found out some things that work, and some that definitely do not – regarding participation. 1st, we needed a $20.00 motivation fee and prizes. Most will not stay involved if they have nothing monetary to lose or gain. Giving it to charity did not work - got the same participation drop out rate as not having a motivation fee. Winner-take-all caused some to drop out if they knew one person was really successful – so then we had 1st, 2nd, & 3rd prizes at the end (splitting the motivation fee proportionally 1/2, 1/3, 1/6.) Furthermore, to sweeten the pot, we had an anonymous donor grant a $5 weekly bonus to the person who lost the best percentage each week. That way, you may not win one of the top three, but you could win a couple of weekly bonuses. Surprisingly, the finalist winners rarely won most of the weekly bonuses, because they were the slow and steady losers, not the quick up and down ones. 2nd, having journals, counting steps, recording exercise minutes or any other form of “measurements” did not work. There were lots of hard feelings about them – some accusations of “fudging” or being too personal. Some people were WAY too competitive – and that also caused hard feelings. We had people chose to lose the way they wished by reducing calories, increasing exercise, or both. We have only one person officially record weights, so no else would know anybody else’s actual weight. We just announce the top finalist’s losses – not current weight. 3rd, we found 4-6 weeks to be too short of a time, and some ladies did silly things to win. 12 weeks was too long and we had a lot of dropouts. 8-10 weeks seems to be the sweet spot time wise – too long for “crash dieters” and short enough not to “burn out”. Now we try to have a 10 week diet challenge, then a 6 week maintenance challenge before another 10 week weight loss challenge. (The maintenance challenge is to kick in $20 and you get double back if you do not gain anything in 6 weeks – normally held over a holiday season.) 4th, we haven’t had many men compete, so that has not been a big problem (of them losing faster). Since we have a wide range of weights (135 – 340), we have tried various versions of % loss or total loss. Last time it was the weekly % bonuses coupled with prizes for the top three total weight lost. This time the main organizers wanted it to be total percentage for the final three prizes. I think this does favor the thinner ones, but I was just asking all your opinions in the hopes to fine tune this continuing completion in the future. Personally, I have lost 35 pounds last year in several of the competitions -- and I hope to do more in the next one. They do keep me motivated. Thanks for your thoughts....See MoreMenopause, Weight Loss and Overcoming Other Symptoms
Comments (0)I noticed a lot of the forum posts were talking about menopause symptoms ranging from night sweats, hot flushes, irritability, moods, body aches, bloating and weight management issues. So I wanted to post up some information that you all might find helpful regarding some basic steps to help overcome those symptoms especially weight gain/ weight loss issues. In my studies with women going through all forms of Menopause (pre, peri, full, post) I have found that there is an over hyphened focus on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or other forms of medication to treat the symptoms women are going through. However what I have discovered through working with women from all ages and menopause stages is that a lot of these practices can be avoided or delayed if you apply the below health steps into place. I am not saying that women going through menopause don't need HRT or medication, but what I am saying is the majority almost 93% of the women I see can avoid it through first making the following health adjustments. Adjustment to their basic nutrition Adjustment to their lifestyle Adjustment to their stress management Adjustment to their activity levels These adjustments don't have to be major, however even the slightest adjustment in all of these areas will have an immediate effect of dropping your symptoms by 60%. Through implementing planned adjustments in these areas you can eliminate 100% of the felt symptoms of menopause including weight related issues. I have seen and helped a lot of women who have felt hopeless to lose weight due to age and being in menopause, drop 5kg in 6 weeks through "holistically" focusing on the 4 areas. A study was done relating to how body weight/ being overweight can be directly related to hot flushes and that in losing weight even slightly the symptoms decreased. This has to do with 1) losing weight makes your body healthier 2) the process of losing weight means you are actioning healthier habits. So my biggest tip for most women going through menopause (not all) who want to lose weight and eliminate felt symptoms is to implement some changes in the above 4 areas of your life and if you feel your weight might be an issue make some small changes at lowering it and you will notice your symptoms will also slowly become controllable. I know weight loss and weight management is a struggle a lot of women going though menopause face, so here is a great facebook group focused on helping women going through menopause lose weight. It provides great advice, tips and answers tough weight related questions. Comments (27)I was really worried I'd be disappointed hitting the scale since I had three meals out over the last few days with friends in town visiting and a work party for my husband. Somehow, I'm not. I seem to be down 1lb which is fantastic. I'd have been satisfied with no weight gain. I've had to officially switch to my summer workout schedule which is now morning swimming or running and I've managed to get in two lap swims and one run. And I felt great on my run this morning. I need to keep this moment in my head if I struggle to maintain this weight loss since it is incredible how much better I feel running when I'm not carrying all that extra weight. And I need to stick with weight lifting at lunch time, which is easy for me to forget when I'm busy with work. @l pinkmountain I really hate how much food advertising there is on streaming and on the internet. I do ok fasting (up to 36 hours) 2 days per week, but I have to find something other than TV to entertain myself because of the commercials. They just wreck me and make me so hungry. Maybe it's not just inactivity but food advertising that has made weight such a challenging thing for our society. @Funkyart congratulations on the pants fitting! That is seriously such a wonderful feeling when something you wanted to wear and couldn't before now fits your body. @jill302 I am so very sorry for your loss! My heart is breaking for you. I'm glad you gave your dog a wonderful home for 17 years but I know the pain of losing a beloved fur family member. And to add the stress of a MIL moving in at the same time. Wow. That is a lot to deal with all at once. @Sueb20 I'm sorry that you have long covid! That's just awful. I hope you start feeling back to yourself soon. I think walking, at any speed, is such a wonderful form of exercise. And that you're able to keep up with exercising when you feel so crummy is a testament to your willpower and strength. Keep it up. Hopefully the moderate exercise will help your immune system heal your body too....See Morelucillle
